Willowbrook 96 – Proviso East 94
Tues, Feb 17th, 2015
Sophomore sensation Alonzo Verge Jr.’s 41 points propelled Willowbrook over visiting Proviso East in a barn-burner of a finish. Senior guard Kalin Fisher’s 33 points wasn’t enough to fuel East, he fouled out with under two minutes remaining in the 4th. He knocked down nine 3’s, he had the Proviso East followers in a frenzy. Fisher has some offensive arsenal, but to reach his potential as a player, his focus should channel more on becoming a complete player doing the little things to secure winnable games. The East team lacks leadership and that responsibility should ideally fall on his shoulders. The pirates led most of two quarters but Willowbrook tied it at 61-61 to end the 3rd. East received a spirited performance behind the play of senior point-guard Marshawn Williams (29 points), he’s a 5-8 jitter-bug, he picked Verge twice late in the game to give East some cushion while leading 77-74 at the 3:49 mark; but things quickly changed, the six foot three Verge being the coldest young player in our state totally took over the game, he made two straight steals, one where he fed a team-mate for a lay-up the second one he came down and drilled a three to put Willowbrook up 79-77. Then he ripped Fisher in the back-court with 3:21 left was fouled and made both free-throws, Fisher received a technical after the pick. Verge soon after nailed two more foul shots giving his team an 84-77 lead, he completely electrified the crowd all night with his dazzling array of cross-over dribbles behind his back, through his legs. This kid is an assassin, he’s a very-very special talent as a young player he’s already established a knack for winning games in the 4th quarter, either at the buzzer or closing seconds. Verge pretty much just toyed with Proviso East for 3 quarters with on-court shenanigans, then he assaulted them late, he should of have had 50. “This was the 2nd best high-school game I’ve seen all year. Verge, has been a refreshing story this season, one of our states best offensive players in recent years.” He landed an offer from Providence right after the game.
