UP & COMERS

• Pat Gordon     Lincoln Park
“Entering his 3rd season at the north-side school. Has assembled a nice core of young talent. Pat has a good side line temperament; his approach leaves his players and families trusting and believing in his system. Has the program looking upward again? One of the P. L’s bright ones.”

• Jay Rhode     Oak Lawn
“Has star qualities. Jay has been innovative in finding effective ways to be successful. His district isn’t spewing out blue chippers either every few years. His body of work has been excellent.”

• Quinn Peterson      Walter Payton
“Already keen with the balance of X&O and understanding the magnitude of academics at his school. Has stardom scripted across him. Over-sees the rising Made-Men Club Program. One of my favorites.”

• Corey Bradford      Simeon
“Once the Head Varsity coach at Solario Academy, now entering his third year as Assistant under Rob Smith’s Program. Things are way too cushy now for Bradford to veer off and implement his own brand elsewhere. The opportunity awaits thou.”

• J.O. Oliver      Curie
“A popular figure in the city circles and Western Suburban areas. Has been Assistant at Curie for a number of years. Has interviewed well for several recent job openings. Coaches in the D Rose Program.”

• Chris Perkins      Willowbrook
“Has been at helm for at least 5 seasons at the West-Suburban school. CP is a very good bench coach and well noted as a player’s coach. He has mastered the ability to deal with challenging issues well as they arrive in his environment. He’s highly regarded.”

• Steven Parham      Kenwood
“A well-armed Assistant Coach at the Hyde Park area school. Entering his third season as a respected Assistant. The Parham name has been synonymous with Chicago hoops since the early 70s. A head gig opportunity should arrive soon.”

• Cornelius Crossley     Rich-Central
“Sized him up last season in a play-off game and absolutely loved his side-line demeanor. A rising bench coach who isn’t fearful of expectations or decisions.”

• Chris Passafiume     Richards
“Entering his 2nd season as varsity coach. Has superb passion for the game, well prepared & has his team playing at a high-clip with limited talent base.”

• Quinn Hayes     St. Viator
“An early favorite to win his league’s conference title. Learning his craft well in the line of fire where expectations are held high, and he’s striving effectively.”

• Greg Bayer      Plainfield Central
“High energy with the good spirit, work ethic un-matched. He will enter his first year as Varsity Coach after several years as an Assistant at his alma mater. He will be dynamite with his kids!”

• Reggie Bates     Kenwood
“An exuberant young coach with a passionate insight on player development. He is currently starting his first year as a Sophomore Coach at Kenwood. A varsity job awaits for this young talent who presently coaches in the Mean Streets Program.”

• Brandon Bright      Whitney Young High School
“He looks to be approaching his 7th season as a valuable Assistant with a program that has been one of our areas finest. Now he’s been through the once customary apprenticeship of coaching at the freshman and sophomore levels. A varsity gig looms soon for the Whitney Young Grad whom I had the pleasure of being there when he was born in May of 1987. I’m very proud of him.”

• Ken Horton      Bogan H.S.
“Primed & ready for a head gig. Ken has been a loyal soldier to the Bengal Program for many years which has prepared him for the challenges he may face as a varsity post awaits. He’s seasoned with star qualities, has excellent rapport with kids, and understands the make-up of developing players.”

NEW RESIDENTS FOR SPECTATORS TO FOLLOW

“Guys who will thrive in a new environment”
• Donnie Kirksey – Chicago Vocational
Returns to his alma-mater where he will attempt to restore the glory days to a once proud tradition. D.K. a colorful character will take some lumps year one, but the former UIC Assistant will prevail. The one-time Hyde Park Academy Coach will return to the side lines with an uphill climb as he looks to establish his program in the newly aligned Power Conference. His fashionable theatrics will make for good viewing as he seeks to build his program. He will succeed!

• Chris Pickett – Kankakee
Had many highs & some lows in the Red South battle field during his lengthy tenure at Vocational. His nights of sparring with the likes of Simeon, Morgan Park, and Bogan were taxing, but it will mentally prepare him for his new challenges. Strapping-up for his first season at Kankakee will seem as if he’s fixated in the corridors of an auxiliary gym setting as he looks to build his program. C.P. will ponder some nights about his decisions to leave the city environment. He will be faced with a daunting task of managing and developing the raw sometime emotional 6-9 junior, T.J. Wicks.

• Antonio Wiltz – Hyde Park Academy
The recent departure of Javon Mamon gave this deserving opportunity for Antonio to thrust into action immediately. Arriving from Conference Rival Vocational where he was a long-time valuable assistant to Chris Pickett, this opportunity can be more than “a short run in charge” in lieu of what outsiders think. He’s paid his dues through the years while coaching on the frosh-soph level for well over 10 years. Now it’s his time to shine and he will have the support system behind, including myself.

While recently trying to identify some of our best young talent in high-school coaching ranks, I came across several candidates who we view as our next wave of coaches whom may one day consider some interest of coaching college hoops. Then some are just content guiding & mentoring young people. I’m very high on my north-side guys and several coaches in the south suburbs. One of the obvious reasons that Chicago has shown a slippage in talent recently is due to a lack of arming our players with the proper basic fundamentals that would help in the growth of their game. “No finger pointing!”

UN-SONG COACHES’ FRATERNITY

The Chicago area has a bumper crop of un-heralded/under-valued varsity coaches who have quietly established their brand by developing their players on and off the court without much fan-fare.

College coaches need to become more familiar with these men and their respective programs. Majority of them have been successful throughout the years and not many have taken notice particularly outside of their schools and communities. “These guys have flourished!” We’re going to identify who they are in briefing.

• William Nelson - Farragut
“This math teacher is long overdue, for the message he represents daily with his players. He probably has the longest tenure of any city coach. well respected bench coach, vastly recognized for developing Big Men, in addition to teaching the necessary fundamentals. Coach Nelson doesn’t harbor a bus-load of talent that once walked the halls at Farragut, but he still manages to develop & produce Division One talent, while winning his share of big games. A mentor for his players, we all admire him & Ron Estridge’s dedication for all the years and the hours they’ve put in.

• Bobby Worthington – Zion Benton
Highly regarded in his community as well as the basketball circles. He’s been the backbone for the Zion Program for close to 20 years. Many of those seasons B Worth was an Assistant under long time Zion Coach Don Kloth. Now entering year three as the head-man, expectations could expand into a lofty projection with the arrival of talented youngsters DaMonte Taylor (2020) and Amar Aguillar (2021). B Worth is the right man guiding this program in a rapidly changing climate. He’s tough enough to handle the masses!

• Henry Cotton – Marshall
Undisputed manager/leader has quietly gone about his business of developing and mentoring his players through all types of hardship. Most city hoop connoisseurs outside of the city west end, aren’t dialed in to what this program has accomplished in the last six years or seven years with their student athletes. No program in their area can bolster that they’re players are moving on getting College degrees while thriving in the professional hoop culture. Marshall H.S. has produced Alfonzo McKinnie (Toronto Raptors), Milton Doyle (G-League, New Jersey), Keifer Sykes landed a lucrative package in China after bouncing NBA camps, and now Vincent Garrett just landed a roster spot with the G-League/ Minnesota T-Wolves.

Now remember NBA Veteran, Patrick Beverly is from the Marshall Program also. Coach Cotton has talented pair of juniors: Henry Coleman and Johnsal Harris to continue his magical run. Hats off to Cotton!

• Anton Harmon – Hope Academy
Took his school down-state for the very first time last season. Harmon, a classy demanding tactician has set lofty goals for his program & his kids and academics is a huge part of his mission at Hope. A one-time Hyde Park Academy and Northern Illinois stand-out, has three potential Division One players suited-up in his Program led by seniors: Javari McClendon, Javion May, and highly touted sophomore Jamari McClendon. I’m surprised Harmon hasn’t been lured away by College opportunities. “A heck of a Coach & individual.”

• Brett Nishidayashi – Taft
He’s come full circle in his career path, wasn’t so long ago he was the toast of the school as a stand-out Point-Guard at Taft. Since returning to his alma-mater, he’s come to be recognized as a Coach & mentor with an “all hands on deck approach”. Excellent teacher with the ability to communicate with his players & families. Brett doesn’t have program changing talent manning the halls as some others, but he manages to keep his teams in contention. He’s viewed as one of our finer coaches in the public league. Sophomore Guard Matthew Lesch is a promising prospect and someone to watch.

• Don Houston – Hillcrest
My man has ruled the South-Suburban Conference for years. This up-coming season might be challenging as he looks to reload with a stable of young talent. Houston has always been regarded as one of our successful Coaches in the South Suburbs, but he doesn’t attract the fan fare outside of the daily south town news outlet. He’s revered by his peers, players and families, and highly regarded by school officials. It wasn’t long ago he took his Hillcrest squad down state 2012, finishing 3rd in Class 3A. “One of my favorite guys…”

• Rich Kolimas – Lincoln-Way East
“Churned out several sparkling seasons at Gordon Tech, which is now called DePaul Prep. Coach K was always recognized as a sharp x & o strategist and a terrific teacher of fundamentals. His work has become more noticeable as we witness the emergence of SIU recruit, Sam Shafer and the rapid development of sophomore Big-Man, Nate Seputis. Coach Kolimas is certainly one of the Top 10 Coaches in the Chicagoland area and viewers will have opportunity to attest to that fact this season. He’s brought that program back to life in a community that’s never satisfied!

• Lawrence Thompson – Joliet Central
The Joliet native has generated some buzz back into a program that had been in a sagging state for years. Now, he’s got some talent to mound together, starting with a nucleus of senior Guards: Cameron Blackmon and Don Joachim, while 6-5 sophomore Kee Hargrow could become a budding star one day. Thompson’s trade-mark has often been his ability to develop un-tapped talent, his body of work at Lockport where he coached for many years speaks for itself; under his guidance Alando Tucker blossomed into a NBA player for several seasons, Karrington Ward plays professionally overseas and Richaun Holmes currently plays for the 76ers. Larry continues to be the shining star of Joliet.

• Scott Miller – Glenbard East
Miller’s Blue Print on his program the last eight years speaks high volumes. His teams are always prepared and fundamentally sound. His rise to success through the years contributed to his ability to bring along his younger players at a good pace while developing a culture that exhibits a winning environment. His accomplishments haven’t gone un-noticed with many of us. This time around he will build with the tandem of sophomore guards DaRon Hall and Alijah Nelson, while senior Korvante Davis will provide some toughness & stability.

• Tim Ervin – Providence St. Mel
One of the ultimate good guys. Hasn’t received nearly the credit he deserves with his program. His labor of work bounces to a different beat then others surrounding him, especially when it comes to landing the kind of student-athlete that excels in a school setting noted for academics. Ervin has thrived on the hardwood as well as in the classroom, you seldom see a kid leaving St. Mel for another program. Ervin, pinned in the Catholic League white division, should do some damage with a squad spearheaded by his son, Tim Jr. and promising six foot ten Center Taeyon Neal.

• Tom White – De La Salle
This guy has been a mainstay, a pillar of success for years in a highly competitive Catholic League. The coaching & administrative work he’s put in has been under-valued by outsiders and media types. Tom has developed a really good culture at the school and runs a close-knit operation. His forward method of thinking has transformed De La Salle as one of our popular hubs to view quality games on Tuesday & Friday nights. Coach White who I consider a dear friend has produced a dozen or more Division One players through the Meteor Program in recent years.

• Rick Runaas – Lemont
Vastly under-rated, once the Head Coach at T.F. North. His name doesn’t resonate with very many people outside his suburban hoop circles, but his peers recognize his talents. Runaas has been District 7 3A/4A Co-Coach of the year by IBCA Coach’s Bureau. His system is a testament to the culture he’s created at Lemont. Rick will have a potent squad this up-coming season led by senior Big Man- Paul O’Leary and 6-7 junior- Nate Ferguson.

• Tim Trendel - Providence Catholic
Highly respected, hasn’t received the accolades in the Catholic League for his success, nor has he had a flood-gate of talent to work with, but his teams are well coached and prepared. Tim runs a well oiled discipline scheme that keeps his ball club in striking contention every game. He will have a fine nucleus to build around this season with a host of football players and senior guard, Scott Slocum while rising junior, Adam Taylor will be a prospect to watch.

• Matt Maloney – Oak Park-River Forest
His close-knit cast is a reflection of who he is and what he’s built in recent years. Despite of being surrounded by more notarized rivals such as – Fenwick, St. Joseph, and Proviso East, Maloney has managed to keep his program at accelerating rate. He’s done an excellent job of branding his young core and overturning their talent to where scouts/colleges and media types all recognize their potential. Expectations loom with the core of Isaiah Fuller, Dashon Enoch, Charlie Hoehne, un-song juniors Anthony Roberts and Marist transfer Chase Robinson.

• Deryn Carter – Elgin-Larkin H.S.
Already entering his 9th season as head varsity Coach at the North-West Suburban School. DC has tremendous energy & passion for the game, his close-knit bond with his kids is a true testament to the culture he’s built during his tenure. Senior, Jalen Shaw at six foot ten with a rapidly improving all-around game, and senior guard Anthony Lynch will provide leadership for this year’s talented group. Junior guard, Vic Perez and sophomore wiz Lorenzo Coney will be players to keep an eye on. Carter is one of the best Coaches in the North-Suburban area.

A MEMORABLE INDEX

Recently I was having a casual evening with some agents and our dialogue switched into a full gear striking a nerve leading up to the depletion of Blue Chip talent in the Chicago area. I went into a defensive mode lobbying while gushing over the prized 2020 crop of promising prospect that could propel our town back to Elite status where we were once revered nationally. These guys in front of me didn’t hesitate to remind me of all the bust we’ve experienced with over-rated/overly hyped hoopers who either didn’t make it to the NBA or just hung on by the threads and lingering around the G League affiliates. These were players that were ranked 1 through 5 in their respective classes coming out of High School. I’ve created a list of players who didn’t necessarily have a household name during school years or bolster McDonald All-American clippings, but they thrived on the next level collegiately. Most went to the right setting out of High School.

• Richaun Holmes Lockport H.S. 2011 – 2 years with the 76ers

• Robert Covington Proviso West H.S. 2009 – 5 years with the 76ers

• Tony Allen Crane H.S. 2000 – 14 years in the League (Pelicans)

• Patrick Beverly Marshall H.S. 2006 – 7 years in the League (LA Clips)

• Sterling Brown Proviso East H.S. 2013 – Rookie/Milwaukee Bucks

• Fred Van Fleet Rockford Auburn 2012 – 2 year Toronto Raptors

• Alec Peters Washington, IL 2013 – Rookie/Phx Suns

• Jack Cooley Glenbrook South 2009 – 1 year in G League-Sac Kings

• DeAndre Liggins Washington H.S. 2007 – 5 years in the League/Bucks

• Alfonzo McKinnie Marshall H.S. 2010 – Rookie/Toronto Raptors

• Jacob Pullen Proviso East H.S. 2007 – Rookie/76ers

• Vincent Garrett Marshall H.S. 2010 – Rookie/G League/T-Wolves

• Mac Koshwal Julian H.S. 2004/2005 – Rookie/G League/76ers

“Boys to Men Prep School, 2 seasons at DePaul”

Here is a short replica of some names from our 2018 &2019 classes we should store away in or memory index that potentially could have a similar journey. Going back to our archives of old reports, seven of these players up top, we often plugged in our un-heralded category.

PLUGGED

Morgan Park’s Blue Chipper Ayo Dosunmu gave Illinois Coach Brad Underwood an early holiday gift when the six-foot five point-guard selected the Illini over Wake Forest recently. The classy thoughtful guard, rated 20th by rivals, will illustrate the kind of dynamic talent the Illini fan base yarn for. “Congratulations go out to their staff.”

Hyde Park Academy Varsity Coach Javon Mamon will join Porter Moser’s Program at Loyola-Chicago as director of operations. Mamon’s late arrival to the Loyola staff was a beautiful surprise. It’s a situation where he will grow in the position & begin a successful path. Moser continues to tap into his resources in the city particularly the public-school system. “It’s called giving brothers an opportunity to push forward.” Re-affirming his stance in a time where our climate poses so much racial and social tension.

Iowa State substantiated their status this fall as a major player in the Chicago area for our Elite talent. Thursday’s verbal from Simeon’s talented Big guard Talen Horton-Tucker was huge, coming after significant commitments from Hinsdale South’s 6-6 Zion Griffin, and 6-10 George Conditt from Corliss. Assistant Coach Daniyal Robinson, a Rock Island native and former Loyola-Chgo Assistant, just displayed what we often knew about him as an ace recruiter, landing this trio speaks high volumes of what the Cyclones plan to do in the area now. During the 80’s & 90’s they suited-up Chicago area players frequently. Kudos to D Rob…

Bloomington’s six foot seven, high-energy Forward Chris Payton has elected to stick around town when he pledged to Illinois State recently. He becomes the second 2019 prospect to commit, remember now Markese Jacobs gave Kansas a verbal last year and we’re interested to see how it will play out.

“Just so you know” one-time Willowbrook & Thornton stand-out Alonzo Verge is wrecking-shop in Juco at Moberly. Verge had an exhilarating outing at Johnny Logan’s Juco Jamboree last weekend in Carbondale where several colleges labeled him as perhaps the best Juco Point-Guard in the country. That doesn’t surprise most of us!

2020 CLASS

This crop of un-heralded youngsters listed we are high on and it provides a sense of depth within this particular group. We should see a considerable change with the development of this group. Several of these kids are going to be good over the next few years which should be added to our highly acclaimed talent we talk about so regularly. These kids just need guidance through challenges and some continued tutelage. There are some prospects that don’t carry the big-name tag currently but we will keep their names a float.

• Josh Holmes 6-0 G Jones Prep

“Transitioning over to PG already equipped with offense ability and a good floor game. Top 15-20.”

• Damonte Taylor 6-4 WF Zion-Benton

“Stardom could arrive soon for this athletic wing. Cagey fella vastly under-rated. Top 10-15 presently.”

• James Baltz 6-4 F Carbondale

“A rising talent & a high-character kid; accurate perimeter shooter played inside last season; 1st baseman in baseball, hoops top 12-15.”

• Connor Kochera 6-3 G St. Viator

“Heady/shrewd performer, can shoot effectively on the perimeter, has the necessary tools to be a very good recruit. Top 15-20.”

• Kyndall Davis 6-4 G/F Homewood-Flossmoor

“This lefty is just coming into his own. Davis, has the proper-approach & mental make-up to be successful. Top 25.”

• Jason Kent 6-1 PG Oak-Forest

“Has a good grasp on pace & climate. He’s skilled, now maturity factor kicks in. Top 20-25.”

• Jamari McClendon 6-2 G Hope Academy

“Resembles former Chicago stand-outs; ultra competitive, makes plays & doesn’t surrender. Can score & plays in a variety of roles, versatility can be his strength. Top 20-25.”

• Romelle Howard 6-8 F/C Lincoln Park

“The big-fella already drawing waves & comparisons. Division one’s have taken notice of his potential. Needs to be guided with basic tutelage. Top 15-20 currently.”

• Matthew Lesch 6-3 G Chicago Taft

“An exciting innovative talent isn’t fearful of the moment or stage. Now guidance is needed. Top 25-30 currently.”

More unknown or un-heralded 2020’s at later date..

NOTEWORTHY

Our state’s top two players Ayo Dosunmu out of Morgan Park and Simeon’s Talen Horton-Tucker has slimmed their list of schools significantly. Ayo has Illinois and Wake Forest down to the wire. Horton-Tucker, fresh-off a recruiting visit to Iowa State this past weekend and has a remaining short list comprised of Georgia Tech, Illinois, Ohio State, St. Louis, and Xavier. It’s un-likely the pair would land in Illini Country together; in fact, Dosunmu might be a safe bet for Champaign.

One of our area’s best kept secrets looms with former Dunbar H.S. stand-out and current St. Louis U. Assistant Will Bailey. He went about his craft quietly with 13 years under his belt, and stops at University Alabama-Birmingham, Chicago State, where he spent a year under Chicago legend Bo Ellis, one year at Maine, and 6 seasons at LaSalle, now enters year two with Travis Ford at SLU. Will, clearly has carved out an exceptional career in coaching, while rising from the south-side Fuller Park neighborhood. Will has made little fanfare in his pursuit of Simeon’s highly sought Horton-Tucker, in which St. Louis stands to be the dark horse out of the six schools still present. Bailey’s rise through the coaching ranks definitely didn’t catch many of us by surprise. A former Illinois Warrior and one of my all-time favorites was always prepared and equipped with a calming presence. He has the necessary make-up to have a long successful career in the business.

Northern Illinois scored a coup when they received a huge commitment from Justin Lee a 6’8” wing forward out of Collins Hill High-School in Atlanta, GA. Lee, suited-up with the Georgia stars summer program had notable offers from Memphis, James Madison, LaSalle, and North Florida. Mark Montgomery and his staff continue to add the necessary parts to his program where he can compete for a MAC conference title year and year out. We envision the Huskies with a NCAA Tournament berth nearing.

Out-side of Chicago State’s lengthy track record of recruiting Chicago Public athletes. Present Loyola-Chicago Coach Porter Moser has sustained a splendid mark with recruiting Public League stand-outs. He currently has on his roster Dante Ingram (Simeon) slated to be a 1st or 2nd team pre-season All-Conference pick. Freshman Lucas Williamson who hails from Whitney Young will be counted on this season to play significant minutes. Moser, just graduated Marshall H.S. star Milton Doyle in May, now Doyle has landed a spot in the NBA’s developmental casting called, The G League. During Moser’s Illinois State Days he recruited Osiris Eldridge a 6’3” guard from Phillips H.S. While at St. Louis U. Porter had the luxury of plucking away under-rated guard Mike McCall from Foreman H.S. Those are certainly some worthy credits Moser can always refer to whenever he encounters a PL talent he needs for his program. Kudos to him?

UNDER-CLASSMEN 2020-2021 CAMP

UNDER-CLASSMEN 2020-2021 CAMP
Was Sunday, October 1st, 2017

SUM-UP

A high number of no shows did not ruin the vibe for me or our crew on hand working this event. In fact, we were collectively enthusiastic regarding some of the young talent we saw on hand and as each prospective player left the building, we knew something about his game/play. While planning & preparing for this event, I knew first-hand the potential challenges that could await. Often we view as working versus climate & landscape this time of year. We won’t surrender though, just as most of our events, it comes with a re-structuring process; and if we continue to render a quality setting, growth will prevail. There were some potentially good players in the two classes assembled; we certainly had things framed correctly, now we have the forum to build on this. Former DePaul Assistant Coach and former Northern Illinois Administrator & Assistant, Robert Collins kick-started the camp with an impactful message to players & parents; former DePaul & U. Conn Assistant Coach, Pat Sellers followed Collins with a reminder of how enthusiastic attitude could lead to a promising career in hoops and beyond.

The camp wrapped-up on a positive note. The Coaches/Instructors did a fine job. Pierre Pierce, one of our State’s All-Time stand-outs and former All-Big Conference performer, shared his thoughts & experience with camp participates. Tom Allen, Pat Sellers, Phil Gary (Former Long Beach State Star), and Walter Payton H.S. Coach Quinn Peterson rounded-out the crew on-hand.

UN-HERALDED PROSPECTS IN 2019 CLASS

In our State we are looking to revive a down-trodden talent base, especially in the Chicago area where high level talent has escaped our reach in recent years.  While Colleges are making their open gym runs, they might want to schedule to see some of these rapidly emerging juniors.

Some of our home-grown products in the College coaching carousel has left a mark in the area in recent months. D Rob at Iowa State landed verbal’s from two un-heralded gems in Hinsdale’s Griffin and Chicago Corliss rising forward Conditt. While Georgia Tech’s T Hardy, has versatile scoring wing Talen Horton-Tucker (Simeon) coming to campus this weekend, the following week, Horton is off to Iowa State for an official visit. Ohio State seems to be in close pursuit and Illinois is still in the picture as well.

FORMIDABLE VIEW

East St. Louis received an early Xmas gift when Vashon (STL) Big-Man Joseph Reece transferred in early in the week. The six foot eight 2018 prospect has the likes of Missouri State, Cleveland State, Old-Dominion, and Murray State in pursuit. Reece will join forces with the Flyers talented 2019 forward Terrence Hargrove. Reece can handle the ball well & run the floor, his shooting isn’t quite there now but he’s a promising prospect. “They are going to be happy in East Boogie.”

Whatever has happened with Kezo Brown. The talented southpaw at Simeon, we are sending him well wishes. People tend to forget some time that basketball is just a small fraction of life. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.
