The Last Word - End of July 2014

The Last Word
From End of July 2014 Issue (download PDF version)

Some people I consider to be close to me gave the LB’er a little raze’n over my rant on the Illinois State guy’s in my last issue.  I wasn’t trying to be a jerk and truly I’m unaware of how their day to day operational process evolves there.  But what I do know is I’ve made it a point to speak with a handful of guys who departed from there.  Governing my state the way I do it’s important for me to pull/support all of our colleges in Illinois, I want all of them to be successful. Now, if they are-on-some-well-known-malarkey, I’m going to call it out!  “I mean who else will?”

Illinois Top 5 All-time State Champions

ILLINOIS TOP FIVE ALL-TIME STATE CHAMPIONS

(The Dusable 1954 Team with Payton Lumpkin and Charles Brown would have been high on the list of most decorated teams, but the selection process started after 1957)

1. (31-0)CHICAGO MARSHALL (1958) COACHED BY:ISADORE "SPIN" SALARIO

Regarded as the most celebrated teams to win the State Title; was the city's first team to capture that feat. They were led to future NBA player GEORGE WILSON - MC THOMPSON - BOBBY JONES - STEVE THOMAS - TYRONE JOHNSON.Marshall High School defeated Rockfalls (33-2) 70-64.With the conditions this group played in back in then 50's this was a remarkable accomplishments.

2. (33-0) THORNRIDGE (1972) COACHED BY:RON FERGUSON

Arguably many consider this team of QUINN BUCKNER - BOYD BATTS - MIKE BONCZYK AND CO. as the #1 team of All-Time.This was the 2nd title appearance in a row.Falcon's had won the previous season defeating Oak-Lawn Community 52-50.This time around they won convincingly crushing Quincy 104-69.Buckner went on to win titles in college and the NBA.He's now currently a NBA broadcaster.
