ISL 2018 WRAP-UP

The ISL Classic shaped up to be a fine event, we saw some competitive play & some up-n-coming teams in the area who seem to be positioning to make a splash this up-coming season. Corliss, T.F. South, Plainfield North, and Cary Grove looked like they could have been pinned champs on Sunday but ran out of gas. De LaSalle sprinted out to a quick start but finished 3-1, they had a strong showing. Oak Park went 3-1 but had to leave after defeating Sandburg in the first round of the playoffs. Prosser and Farragut had very good showings, Walter Payton was short handed both days and their chances took a major hit when stand-out guard Ryan Trotter went down with an ankle injury. Rockford Auburn and Niles North finished 3-2, both had strong outings, while Lincoln Park finished out 2-2. The event wrapped up to be a success.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME-SITE: PLAINFIELD CENTRAL

RICHARDS 58 – EAST AURORA 29

In Plainfield, IL (Sept. 15th & 16th) the title game on Sunday featured two surprising but promising programs Richards from Oak-Lawn and East Aurora; the two un-foreseen teams squared off in the Spot-Liter finale where Richards went on to walloped the fatigued west suburban Tomcats behind the splendid play of stand-out junior forward Paul Zilinskas and senior athletic stud Trevon Jones. Zilinskas was named tournament MVP, the six-foot five Euro-type swingmen demonstrated why he is highly regarded as a top 35-40 prospect in the 2020 class. The 6-4 Jones is under-recruited prospect, he’s a match-up nightmare capable of scoring in the paint but can also drain jumpers on the perimeter consistently. Richards outlasted several pretty good teams to reach the title game, they beat Niles North in the quarters and a vastly improved Chicago Corliss squad in the semi-final. Junior guard Kajuan Wines also performed well during the two-day hoop classic. East Aurora was a total stunner, they managed to escape a tough pool despite dropping their first game to an under-rated Plainfield North squad on Saturday. They defeated a talented junior-Laden Crane team on Sunday morning to build some steam heading into the play-off bracket. The Tomcats were spearheaded by steady guard play, leading the way was all-tournament first teamer Tarone Kirkwood with help from senior tandem of Jules Williamson and Josh Pryor. East Aurora knocked-off Chicago Farragut, T.F. South, and Plainfield North to advance to the title game. Unfortunately, senior swing-man Williamson could not suit-up due to leg cramps; another key member of their un-song cast was hampered by injury during the final.

I’M GOING TO IDENTIFY MY GUYS

• Quinn Peterson – Walter Payton – sharp as they come with highly educated background. Has done a heck of a job with a Program that had been in a sagging state for years. With returning senior captain Ryan Trotter and juniors Jabari Chiphe & Liam Dillion, they should position themselves for winning the Division this upcoming season. Peterson, likely will move on to the College ranks soon.

• Pat Gordon – Lincoln Park – entering year 4, Gordon has established himself as thick skinned, demanding coach whom has assembled array of talented youngsters. Future College Coach.

• Chris Passafiume – Richards – unknown around the city circles but not for long! He possesses the total package. This up-coming season could mark a re-birth of success in hoops. Chris Pass 2018-2019 athletic squad will be dangerous, they won the ISL 2018 Classic last weekend. College coaching could be in his cards if he wants it.

• Perrick Robinson – Prosser – we are starting to see the fruit of his labor pay-off. With talented sophomore point-guard Norvell Meadows and rising 2020 prospect Semaj Williams, Coach Moon will be primed for fine season. Prosser was impressive at the ISL Fall Classic, finishing 3-2 dropping a first-round play-off game to Corliss. Two highly touted Freshmen Antonio Sutton and Brandon Jones could see significant time on the varsity.

• Greg Bayer – Plainfield Central – year two should bring some excitement to the Wildcat student/community fan base. G Bay exhibits great energy, spirit, and work ethic. With seniors Maurice McCullum and Marc Arsenault, he will have his squad playing at a high-clip.

• Paul Hobson – Butler Charter – has quietly built his Program the last several years around genuine student athlete types. This season will draw heighten expectation especially with stand-out senior guard Teon Nesbit poised to average close to 25 markers an outing. College coaches should get to know Hobson a H.F. grad with a promising coaching future.

• Cornelius Crossley – Rich Central – a player’s coach, has excellent side-line demeanor and has done a marvelous job of developing under-rated senior Chance Love (28) and athletic wing Bryonte Washington, we just hope the South Suburban politics won’t factor in his growth or rise.

• Jay Rhodes – Oak Lawn – innovative with star qualities, has operated successfully without top-notch talent roaming his school hallways, but manages to keep his squads competitive and in contention. I’m quite fond of the job he’s done at his school. Jay wears a number of hats at the school.

• Alonzo Crowder – Crane – a long time Assistant to Gary London at Hales. Now, Crowder has the storied Crane Program Relevant again. His talented junior laden core has many locals gleaming. Jimarius Sneed (18), Kenny Sallee (27), Robert Hobb (70), and Rashad Harris has the west side school in conversation again. The future looks bright for Crowder and his Program.

• Adam McCloud – Cary Grove – not a well-known name, familiar in the hoop circles, but folks around the north-west suburbs will flock to see his talented team lead by touted juniors Beau Frericks (21) and big man Frank Jakubicek (40). McCloud will be a rock star soon in his area.

• Reggie Bates – Hyde Park – newly appointed Head-Coach will guide the Program into a new era/culture as the Obama library revives the Jackson Park neighborhood. Bates’ exuberant spirit & insightful feel for player development will have him in position to be competitive swiftly. In fact, he will have all the necessary vices surrounding him to become superb bench coach. College gig could be in his future.

THE AREA’S YOUNG COACHES FRATERNITY

Most Colleges nationally have become quite familiar with Chicago area names, Rob Smith, Ty Slaughter, Nick Irvin, Don Houston, Arthur Goodwin, and Lou Adams; on the heels of our ISL Fall Classic, it’s become quite recognizable of the bumper crop of young coaches coming through the ranks now. I’ve found a special gratitude and appreciation for their commitment and character, while it’s been extremely gleeful for myself as well as our staff to watch up close as these young guys build their brand. The future of hoops surrounding Chicago area looks to be in good hands with this next wave of promising tacticians. Kudos to them as they seem to genuinely care about their players and their safety, especially during a time where our focus should be fixated on youth.

Loyola-Chicago and Northern Illinois scooped-up some really good prospects with- in the past several weeks, signaling that their respective programs will continue to be in contention for years to come. Most of us locals can actually see the body of work the NIU coaching staff continues to exhibit.

The NBA’s recent Hall of Fame ceremonies struck an emotional cord with many of us Chicagoans. Former DuSable High-School stand-out and Philadelphia 76ers great Maurice Cheeks gave tearful speech at his induction reminding many of his journey to fame. Most of us can relate to his Robert Taylor homes up-bringing, I thing I might’ve shared a tear during his speech.

Tom White at DeLaSalle has been a Catholic mainstay for years, now the next phase of his Program will be fueled by the returning core of letterman, along with the addition of Jones College Prep transfer Josh Holmes, and influx of talented freshmen, puts the Meteors in the position to be a dark-horse in the competitive Catholic League. City favorite & Meteors’ alum Maxwell Jackson will join White on the bench this season. Look for key contributions from 6-5 senior Clyde Benton, 6-3 senior Alex Raiford, Daniel Cooper a 6-2 senior guard, junior guard Josh Holmes (42). Freshman phenom Jalen Brown, and highly regarded classmate 6-7 frosh Marcellus Cohen will have significant playing time to strut their potential.

Six foot three 2020 point-guard Sincere Parker has drawn wave reviews from a fine showing during the open July period. Sincere’s rise has now dotted him as a Spot-Liter Top 25 ranking & rising as the up-coming season approaches. Parker has become a player to watch in the class.
