THE END GAME

Our area just came off an un-believable weekend, where North-Side Loyola Chicago captivated the city as well our state with one the more feel good stories of the year.
Loyola’s sweet sixteen run to Atlanta only reinforced what many of us have felt since December about Porter Moser’s eleventh seeded squad headed for highly anticipated collision with a hot Nevada team Thursday night. The Ramblers late season push, flashes memories of the 1985 Rambler team and DePaul’s accelerating success in the late 1970’s. The city has hopefully joined in on the ninety-eight-year-old sister Jean Band Wagon.

Illinois kids have shined over the last weekend exemplifying our once status as a big game/clutch performers during the NCAA play: Zac Norvell (Simeon), Dante Ingram (Simeon), Keita Bates (Normal U-High-Bloomington), Charles Matthews (St. Rita), Cameron Krutwig (Jacobs), Tommy Hamilton (Whitney Young), Lucas Williamson (Whitney Young), Jalen Brunson (Stevenson), Jevon Carter (Proviso East), Sean O’Mara (Benet), Nojel Eastern ( Evanston), Admiral Schofield (Zion Benton), Kendall Stephens (St. Charles East), Jordan Caroline (Champaign Central). We all have band together to become proud cheerleaders for all of them.
Highland Community College located in Freeport, Illinois has enjoyed a fine season. Chad Boudreau has his troops in Juco Finals in Hill Hutchinson, KS. Where they dropped a hard-fought contest to South-Plains. Congratulations to them on a fine season.

Despite of sagging attendance again in Peoria, the state High-Schools hoop season officially ended this past weekend. A week ago, Orr walked (ran away) with the 2A Title drubbing Winnebago 76-49. This past week-end Whitney Young became a recipient of Belleville West’s E.J. Liddle’s coming out viewing. The six-foot seven Junior led West to a 4A Title in over-time victory over Young 60-56. He recorded 17 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks. He’s arguably the No. 1 Prospect in our 2019 Class with Illinois, Missouri, Notre Dame, Purdue, and Northwestern in hot pursuit for his services. The 3A Title game featured a tough close-knit Springfield Southeast squad versus 3A regular Morgan Park. The Mustangs managed to prevail with a 71-56 win. Southeast Coach Lawrence Thomas, a close friend, finally had the state tournament platform to demonstrate how he is considered to be one of our state’s better coaches and teachers of the game. Thomas had his team ready & prepared for a late season stand. His Juniors, Anthony Fairlee & Terrion Murdix showed they’ve been vastly under-rated.

It’s amazing to me, as to how College Coaches can be so zoned out when it comes to Farragut High-School who clearly excels at producing untapped talent. William “Wolf” Nelson and his staff do such a superb job of turning over undeveloped talent. Viewers down in Hutchinson, KS are getting a first-hand point of reference, while sizing-up first year Barton Community College forward and former Farragut stand out – Kwansie “Squeaky” Wilkins. He’s at the Juco Finals captivating an audience with his hard-nose play and ability to splash offense. Notables, Bradley, Loyola, Wisconsin, Western Michigan, UIC, Kent-State, Indiana State, and Albany have recently offered. Albany was much earlier. Squeaky is an academic qualifier. This afternoon Barton takes on Indian Hills with Proviso East Alum Antonio “Boo Man” Williams in their line-up!

“Just a heads-up for future Farragut prospects. 2019 guard Aaron Strong and stellar sophomore point-guard Reggie Strong will be Division One recruits. 6-6 – 2019 forward Demetreus Shaver is a sleeper; his game is starting to emerge. Farragut kids tend to be late bloomers and generally have grades.

The state’s top available senior, Libertyville’s Drew Peterson has a visit slated at Rice University April 7th/8th. After leaving “the Huston campus, I’d been interested to see what his decision is.”
