MOVN’ AND SPACING

Former Providence Catholic Alum “98”, Tavaras Hardy was named Head-Coach at Loyola University- Maryland today. The Northwestern stand-out was destined to land a head gig soon. Hardy, an assistant at Georgia Tech the last few seasons will inherit a pretty good returning roster at the Patriot League school. He has the profile & background to connect with the kinda student-athletes it takes to succeed at a school where academics is a valued priority. Watch him accelerate that program to one of best in the conference then exit for larger challenge in a few years. The key for him is to hiring the right staff from the start.

Montini Catholic H.S. Coach Darryl Thomas passed away from a heart attack this morning. The St. Joseph stand-out and Indiana player under Bob Knight was a real mentor/gentleman. West-Suburban legend will always be remembered as a beautiful person. This untimely passing really saddens our hearts today.

The entire Chicago hoop community is heart-broken over the recent death of former University High stand-out, Zeke Upshaw. The 6-8 athlete played 3 seasons at Illinois State. “For those who don’t know by now, Zeke collapsed on the court of a G-League game last Saturday night.” Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family & friends. “It’s been a tough month for some of our local products.

“Yes, Loyola has the area believing & feeling really optimistic about the Ramblers chances of romping Michigan this week-end. Visions of confetti falling from a post-game stage while celebratory players, coaches hug and embrace while sharing the moment.” See, Chicago has kind of been tormented by a basketball wasteland nowadays, Loyola has made the city proud again and thankful!

Amid the chaos offers, all the bandwagoners who lust just to meet or hug our beloved international treasure, Sister Jean, who is now widely known as living on the Loyola campus; she is comfortably flanked by three body guards and two nurses. “Just saying.” Now come word, the University is price gouging, they are selling Sister Jean bobble-heads. They’re going for a lucrative two grand a pop! LOL

Tracy Dildy’s ouster at Chicago State will leave a huge void at the South-Side School. From hoops to a revenue, fundraising standpoint. Reportedly, he had significant amount of donations floating into the athletic department yearly. Amid reports, this will be a hard job for any newly appointed victim. Maybe Lance Irvin & his family would take a stab. It’s a challenging position seeming though administrators tend to be Cut-throaters.

The hate meter is out in full force these days behind the Loyola Ramblers recent success. From various vices & social media engines, I’ve often disclosed that Chicagoans can be so competitive with one another at times, while not displaying timely support. This is a unique time where being someone else’s cheerleader will create huge dividend for so many people. What’s so wrong with supporting others achieve their dreams? We tend to not always be fully present with the big picture.

Illinois Mr. Basketball Honor’s went to Junior stud E.J. Liddle of Belleville West. His play at the State Tournament a week ago captivated writers and scouts, especially those down-state pockets where writers religiously vote for players in the Central & Southern part of our State for that prestigious honor. E.J. is talented & worthy of the Honor. Now, the Illini will have to tussle with Mizzou, Notre Dame, and Purdue for his services.
