Report (3) 10/29/2014

Reported – October 29th, 2014

Wabash Valley Junior College has demonstrated during some recent jamborees that the forward tandem of Kasey Elam-Carter and Denzel Smith could present some serious offensive damage to opponents.  Both freshmen were often considered unheralded during their senior campaign last season.  Elam, an athletic six foot eight forward who is skilled & has the ability to drain jumpers consistently from the perimeter. His game can be quietly exhilarating at times.  “I have always viewed the Champaign Centennial Alum as a high-major recruit after his juco experience.  Denzel, a Danville native has always shown the ability to score the ball.  Then he had a growth spurt between his sophomore and junior year where he sprouted out to be 6-6.  The Missouri Valley schools such as Southern Illinois, Bradley, Indiana State, Loyola-Chicago and A10 foes as St. Louis U & La Salle should circle his schedule on their calendars.

Report (2) 10/29/2014

Reported – October 29th, 2014

DePaul received as early season blow when prized junior college transfer Rashaun Stimage broke his foot in practice over the weekend.  The six foot eight forward had surgery today, he’s expected to be out 8-10 weeks.  This upcoming season should be an exciting one for the Blue Demons.  Coach Oliver Purnell has a surplus of quality pieces available to him this round.  Despite the loss of the coveted recruit Charlie Thomas, a 6-9 power forward from Baltimore who will take the services to Wisconsin, Coach Purnell has the program on an upward swing.  “We wish Stimage a speedy recovery.”

Report (1) 10/29/2014

Reported – October 29th, 2014

I’m happy to disclose that Daniyal Robinson, entering his second season at Loyola University Chicago was named associate head coach.  The Rock-Island native spent three seasons at the University Houston before reuniting with head coach Porter Moser last season.  DRob was the lead recruiter on Moser’s Illinois State staff from 2004-07.  After his tenure at ISU, DRob headed to his alma mater Arkansas Little Rock for the 2007-08 campaign where he served as assistant coach helping the Trojans to a Sun-Belt Conference Title and their first 20 win season since 1995-96.  DRob also had a two year stint at Iowa State (2008-10).  A high character person, you wouldn’t find a more deserving individual in the profession.

State of Affairs 10/24/2014 Reported

State of Affairs

(October 24th, 2014 Reported)

Lincoln (IL) sharp shooter Gavin Block gave a verbal to Ohio University a short while ago.  Block demonstrates a high basketball I.Q. at six foot five, Gavin is destined to have a banner career at the MAC conference school.

De LaSalle 6-4 wiry guard Karl Harris gave a verbal to LaSalle University last weekend, marking what we believe in these parts as an acquisition that’s primed for success.  Chicago native Will Bailey (Dunbar) did his homework.  “The explorers will continue to make a push in the Illinois area.

The Isaiah Moss watch continues to be interesting on a weekly basis.  The much coveted Simeon stand-out has drawn offers from DePaul, Rhode Island, Pittsburgh, Iowa, LaSalle, and Cincinnati.   Texas El Paso most recently enjoyed a home visit with him.  Also, Iowa State just offered.  “Grades may be his issue.”

St. Rita 6-8 big man Miles Carter has a scheduled visit to Seton Hall next weekend, which might be a stretch or so for him, but it’s obvious the pickings are slim with front-court assistance everywhere.  Carter recently had a visit from Old Dominion, while LaSalle continues to monitor his progress as well.

Pittsburgh came in to do a school visit with St. Rita six foot three shooting guard Kain Harris a few weeks ago.

In Dixon, IL known as the founder of corporate giant Walgreens, basketball has never been a noted eccentricity for the small community but six foot eight “do everything” forward Isaiah Roby might be a part of some rebirth in this sleepy town.  The top 10 2016 stand-out gave Nebraska a verbal late last week, marking the 3rd player from Illinois that the Corn-Huskers have zoomed in on.  Roby will be a good one for that upcoming Big 10 Program.

Elijah Thomas, a 6 foot 9, 245 pound four-star forward from Lancaster, Texas a University of Illinois recruiting target gave an oral commitment to Texas A&M last week.  In addition to Illinois Thomas had considered SMU, LSU and Oklahoma State.  Now the Illini’s focus will be in pursuit of one-time Warren Township 6 foot 7 forward Darius Paul who’s currently saddled in Texas at a junior college.  Forward Carlton Bragg remains on their watch list.  The Illini have on scholarship available in its 2015 class.

6-7 Lake Forest forward
Evan Boudreaux made a decision to attend Dartmouth.  His verbal to them certainly wasn’t a surprise.  He should become a dynamite player in the Ivy League.

Proviso East’s high-scoring combo guard Kalin Fisher chose Southern Illinois Edwardsville.  The OVC conference could be a situation where he can display his prowess as a scorer.

State of Affairs

State of Affairs

It hurt my heart when I found out about the loss of my dear friend Wayne McClain, a true stud.  Our state lost one of our ambassadors of the game.  My memories of Wayne will always be treasured.  His coaching endeavors led him on a journey to serve 18 years as assistant at Peoria Manuel.  While in 1995 Wayne guided Manuel to the first of 3 state titles during his first three years at the helm.  USA Today named his 1997 state championship squad National High School Champions and he was also named National Coach of the Year.  In 2001 Rob Judson’s departure from Illinois left a vacancy, he was named head coach at Northern Illinois, which paved the way for Coach McClain to pursue his goal as a college coach.  “Bill Self, being the stand-up guy he’s always been didn’t look any further, there wasn’t a better candidate suited for the opening than Coach McClain.”  He spent 11 seasons as assistant coach under Coach Self and Bruce Weber, his last 3 years seasons he served as associate head coach to Weber.  The 2012 season Wayne joined Weber’s staff at Kansas State for a 9 month period, then returned to Champaign where he’d become a pillar in the community.  He quietly took over the Champaign Central program and led them to prominence, achieving unprecedented heights as a team.  They were one game away from the state finals in Wayne’s hometown of Peoria.  “A legend who will be sorely missed.”

Most colleges these days criss-cross the country looking for front-court help, well the New England area may be the destination to evaluate some front-court players.  Lee Academy in Maine has an abundance of skilled foreign prospects on-hand who might just be overlooked.  Most of their players border on the mid major level.  “I had a chance to watch these guys closely for a few days.”  They also have 3 or 4 terrific under-classmen as well.

I’ll identify some of their Div I post-grad prospects they have on hand:

October 15th, 2014

Northwestern continues to add pieces to an already talented young roster.  The Wildcats received a verbal from Aaron Falzon a six foot eight forward from Northfield Mount Harmon Prep.  Falzon, who can really stroke-it, is considered a consensus top 100 nationally acclaimed prospect.  He played for a Nike program called Expression Elite.

Northern Illinois was in the market for some perimeter shooting and they landed one in 6-5 IMG Academy guard Austin Pauga, who formally played his first 2 years at Naperville Central.  Pauga definitely is a sharp shooter and he fills a hole they so badly needed.  “The Huskies are on the move.”

“In the state of Illinois there’s no such thing as an off-season when it relates to high-school hoops.”

October 14th, 2014
Tyler Seibring a 6 foot 7 stretch four from Normal Community came to the conclusion that Elon would be the institution where he will get his educations and play hoops.  Seibring’s decision wasn’t a total surprise, we’d been hearing rumblings for weeks about his fondness for the Elon coaching staff and the whole academic environment.  Seibring, an unheralded forward, considered by many of us scouting service buffs to be a top 20-25 prospect in 2015 class.  He’s primed to have a fabulous career at the North Carolina area school.  Lincoln (IL) sharp-shooter Gavin Block, a club team-mate of Tyler’s on the Net-Gain squad could take the same route.  “It wouldn’t be startling!”  Neither of those kids need to be leaving our state.

2015 Junior College Player to Watch

2015 Junior College Player to Watch

An early capsule on the junior college bound players; it’s crystal clear this will be their route.  “A short but early listing for now.”

Adrian Smith    6-3    G    MM-LM+    East Aurora – “Slick/smooth combo guard; has talent; after a 2 year stint mid-major’s will flock for his services; dynamite passer with the ability to score in a variety of ways.”

Nylek Cobb    6-5    F    LM    Rockford Auburn – “This kid will elevate his stock in the junior college ranks.”  Junk-yard dog clone – great motor; makes plays at both ends.  Skills aren’t polished yet, but he’s an athletic open-court finisher.

Darius Ousley    6-9    C    -------    Springfield South-East – “Not a household name yet.”  But he’s a promising post-player who could very well muster-up some steam for himself before the season ends.

Logan Ivy    6-6    SF    LM    Plainfield Central – “Rugged base-liner; runs the floor well; rebounds the ball with authority; offensive game starting to take shape.  “I like his upside.”

Deshon Fluckus    6-2    G/F    LM+-LM    Chicago Uplift – “Excellent motor; has some talent to be a Div. I Mid-Major one day.  “Could be a versatile defender.”

Juwan Stewart    6-3    G    LM    Elgin Larkin – “This kid has a wealth of ability now; it’s a matter of him getting stronger; his stock will soar in juco.”

Antoine Boyd    6-4    SF    LM    Chicago Bogan – “Lefty puts in work; a big game player who thrives as a role player; rebounds/blocks shots and scores around the rim.”  Nothing flashy about his game.

Joe Wiliams    6-3    WG    LM+    Galesburg – “Dynamite stroke; combo guard; knows how to score; sat out his junior year for unspecific reasons; has a chance to be very good player.”

Lavonte Sutton    5-8    PG    LM    Chicago Orr – “Once billed as a can’t miss gem; spent last 2 years in Carbondale; now he has to prove himself in the classroom.”

Stevenson’s Connor Cashaw put an end last week to any speculation regarding where he will suit-up next season.  Rice University landed a high-character-kid in addition to his all-around ability to score.  Connor averaged close to 18 markers per outing last season, contributing some heavy lifting towards Stevenson’s 4A runner-up splash.  This acquisition by Rice just proves that if you come in the Chicago area and target the right kids, you’d get some positive results.  Rice continues to add the right ingredients to a program on the rise.  Assistant Scott Pera has often proven he’s effective at getting things done.

Armani Chaney, a dazzling five foot nine point-guard and a member of the Spot-Liter’s all-flair team, chose Tennessee State after a week of pondering over his choices.  Good fit & superb league for him to strut his arsenal of moves.

De LaSalle’s rangy/wiry guard Karl Harris just received an offer from LaSalle.  “Now that seems to be a match made for a long-term affair.”  Hopefully with an official visit in-the-works within the upcoming weeks, Karl might like the A10 environment.

Rock Chalk Jayhawk – Kansas has an Illinois trio of Damonte Williams a 2017, 6-3 guard from Peoria Manual one of the top 5 or 6 players in the class.  Nick Rakocevic 6-9, 2016 forward regarded as a top 3 prospect in his group and newly arrived Morgan Park point-guard Marcus LoVett (2015) on campus this weekend.  October 10th -11th. “Hmmmm . . . .”

Simeon’s 6-5 wing Isaiah Moss might be getting close to a decision soon.  He’s likely the best uncommitted prospect in the 2015 class.  DePaul’s in the mix strong while LaSalle and Cincinnati seem to be making a late push.  A few weeks ago Isaiah made an official visit to Rhode Island.

Some excitement has been generated around the DePaul basketball program regarding an upcoming visit from D.C. area 6-9 forward Charlie Thomas Jr.  Athletic and skilled plays extremely hard; this is the kind of player Oliver Purnell has been bracing himself for during his tenure at DePaul.  Now the Blue Demons need to beat out Wisconsin, Rutgers, and LaSalle.

Old Dominion University paid a visit to the Chicago area on Monday getting a glance at front-court prospects such as Joe Borcia 6-11, 2015 at Libertyville and St. Rita’s 6-8 big man 2015 Miles Carter.  James Clarr a promising six foot nine stretch four will be next on the viewing list for Old Dominion, slated for next week.

Ferris State continues to be a presence in Illinois and from a visibility standpoint it has paid dividends.  They landed Bogan’s six foot seven forward Antonio Thomas a steal for Ferris State.
Local Div. II program Lewis University nabbed a winner in Bloomington Central Catholic combo guard Jake Reinhart.  One of my favorites in the 2015 class.  Reinhart won a 2A championship last season.  “Some Div One’s in Illinois missed the boat on this kid.”
Some other notable prospects made decisions recently; underrated 6-4 Providence Catholic scoring guard Jake Brody committed to Indianapolis; 6-8 center Kyle Flannigan of Oak-Forest gave a verbal to Wisconsin Park-Side; while Lake Zurich offensive-minded guard Mike Travlos settled on Hillsdale College.  “These are all quality pick-ups for division 2 programs.

Bolingbrook/Plainfield East 10/5/2014

Sunday, October 5th, 2014

Well, this afternoon the Chicago Bears football game didn’t peak my interest, I kind of assumed the outcome wasn’t going to be a happy ending!  So I made my way to Aurora’s supreme courts where a slew of western suburban schools laced em up during the afternoon hours.  I strutted in on the Bolingbrook/Plainfield East contest, a highly spirited match-up which featured Illinois bound ace Aaron Jordon vs Bolingbrook’s Prentiss Nixon heading to Colorado State.  A duel worth the price of admission, both I’m nominating to my all-flair squad!  Both schools combined to have seven division I players on the court.  Quite intriguing for a fall league game in the western suburbs.  Here’s a quick capsule on them.  Bolingbrook’s underrated guard Broderic Thomas wasn’t there, he’s was hurt.

Aaron Jordan    6-4    WG    SR    Plainfield East
Clearly the best player on the court, even though Nixon wasn’t far behind.  The future Illini guard knocked down jumpers, showed some slashing ability; physically looks marvelous; has to become more crisp getting around defenders.  “He was good.”

Prentiss Nixon    6-1    G    SR    Bolingbrook
Colorado St. bound combo can be breath taking at times; he has the abilities to paralyze defenders.  Now he has a 100 moves to go with, athleticism and he’s a respectable jump shooter who can get it off at any time.

Julian Torres    6-8     F/C    SR    Bolingbrook
Wisconsin-Green Bay recruit was a force offensively scored on the block and went-out to the perimeter made shots.  More impressive was his leadership qualities and he showed he was a good teammate.  “Has to focus on defensive end.”

James Claar    6-9    F    SR    Plainfield East
Division One recruiters will be beating the pavement for his services in the near future.  “Trust me.”  Claar is not an interior player, once he adds some strength to his frame look-out.  He’s a knock-down shooter from 18+.  He’s definitely a forward.

Zachery Grady    6-6    PF    JR    Bolingbrook
Kind of an unknown commodity the big fella is the real deal, he’s a skilled scorer whether he’s posting or outside displaying his feathery touch; has excellent footwork.  “A player to watch.”

Jordan Reeves    5-9    PG    JR    Plainfield East
Kind of stole some thunder from the Jordan-Nixon duel.  My first time seeing this kid.  He’s got some swag to go with a deft floor game.  Sneaky hops in the transition; looks like a mid-major recruit when he adds some muscle.  “Good look’n prospect.”

Elyiah Goss    6-7    F    JR    Plainfield East
Potentially he could be a terrific mid-major coup capable of being lethal when attacking the rim off-the-dribble.  Needs to spend more time polishing his skills; very athletic.

News: 10/5/2014

Put it in your memory bend:
this new trend of lengthy fall leagues are just one major injury from folding.  Isn’t the fall season supposed to be dedicated toward conditioning?  In addition wouldn’t one think that getting players academically acclimated to their studies prior to the season be an emphasis, that way he or she can manage their school work & study habits on a more efficient rate?  “I mean I just thought getting student-athletes off-to-a-good start academically should be the primary focus.”  But who am I?

Morgan Park’s “sure-handed” junior playmaker Charlie Moore will go down as one of the more decorated players to suit-up at the school, which has a rich basketball tradition.  Moore already has two state titles under his belt and he’s in position to maybe land one more before tenure is over at the south-side school.

News & Updates: 10/5/2014

October 5th, 2014 – More Notes from Aurora Supreme Courts Fall League

West Aurora 6-9 forward Carlton Williams will be leaving the area soon.  The family will be moving to the state of Alabama.  He played for the Mean Streets club team.

I recently saw Illinois State recruit Roland Griffin in a fall league contest.  “What a physically gifted athlete; he’s recently gotten in the gym and worked on his perimeter shooting, at 6-6 he potentially could put together a nice portfolio of monster dunks.  He plays like he’s on cruise control at times, but he’s a talent.

Athletic southpaw Jalen Adams a six foot five junior at Plainfield East is a player to watch for me this upcoming season.  Mega hops jump-shot looks like it’s coming along, he has an excellent frame to go along with a humble attitude.  Adam’s looking like a sleeper at the wing forward position in the 2016 class.

The Mac Irvin Back To School Classic

Saturday-October 4th, 2014

After I registered a subpar workout early morning, I lingered over to the classic held at Whitney Young – the new mecca of high school hoops in Chicago.  I sought to have a firsthand viewing of California transplant Marcus LoVett, “the hot shot lefty” whom has drawn considerable buzz since his arrival at Morgan Park.  No doubt, the local masses were on-hand ready to critique his every move.  As I sat there eye-balling his play, I couldn’t help but drift back to several era’s when we had another high school lefty in our town – Lenny Williams a prolific scorer who averaged a cool 30+ a couple of seasons 1975-76 at the now defunct Harrison High School.  Now I’m not saying the kid LoVett is Len Williams – but parts of his skills set including several of his moves took me back!  LoVett, at 6 foot 1 is clever and capable of punishing defenders; off the dribble he can be lethal and possess a good understanding of executing the pick-n-roll.  The game between Morgan Park and Kenwood a ragged affair, contributed by poor officiating left a sour taste with anyone there to see quality play.  Kenwood, an upcoming program suited-up 2 notable transfers -6’8” So. Manny Patterson and 6’2” Jr. Zion Morgan teaming with returning stand-out junior Nick Robinson a top 15 prospect in the 2016 class.  When the final results were tallied, LoVett and back-court mate Charlie Moore (2016) were the best players on the floor while Kenwood’s Manny Patterson showed his future is on the upswing.  “Before the conversation even begins, yes LoVett will be one of the top players in the 2015 class hands down.”

Williams 6-7 SR Chicago Simeon, Jeremiah Tilman 6-11 SO East St. Louis, Nojel Eastern 6-3 SO Guard from Evanston on-hand for a series of work-outs.  “I sure hope the trio value their experience with USA basketball, while taking advantage of the opportunity at hand.”

Quentin Richardson - Chicagoland Sport’s Hall of Fame

One of Chicago’s finest Quentin Richardson was inducted September 17, 2014 into the Chicagoland Sport’s Hall of Fame.  The former DePaul star played at Whitney Young where he was a 3 time all-starter, he played 13 years in the NBA.  Q, currently works for the Detroit Pistons as a coach for player development.  Q also suited-up for the storied Illinois Warriors Club Program where he will always be recognized as one of L.B.’s all-time favorites.
