Whitney
Young throttled its way around Evanston securing a 67-59 victory behind strong
guard play and timely foul shooting, while clapping down on Nojel Eastern,
Evanston’s stand-out Purdue recruit late in the game. Young will advance taking
on Fremd Friday in a semi-finals tune-up in Peoria. Whitney Young went with a short
leash in their rotation, only using six or seven guys, their back-court trio:
Javon Freeman, Xavier Castaneda, and Craig Beaudion was too much for Evanston.
Beaudion, is the glue man for this unsung young team. Evanston Sophomore
point-guard Jaheim Holden had some stretches where he looked impressive. A
great crowd turned out at Chicago State witnessing a very good High School game
with two seasoned coaches matching wits!
Evan
Gilyard 32 points lead Simeon’s Blitz past Edwardsville 76-64 in a 4A
Quarter-Final match-up that was billed as a state Championship rumble. Simeon
jumped on Edwardsville early and led at half 44-27. All wonder Senior recruit Mark
Smith was held in check with 12 points didn’t score in the fourth period.
Simeon utilized a box and one defensively limiting Smith, who pumped in 45 on
Danville Friday night. Simeon will play Bolingbrook on Friday in the state
semis. UTEP signee Gilyard was magnificent. He recorded 17 points in the final
period. Sophomore general KeJuan Clements tallied 14 and high jumping Messiah
Jones went for 16 points & 10 rebounds. Senior sharp shooter Oliver Stephen
finished with 16 points for Edwardsville.
3A & 4A State play-offs in Peoria looks like
it’s going to be a climatic finish to the 2017 High School season.
