The Last Word - End of July 2014

The Last Word
From End of July 2014 Issue (download PDF version)

Some people I consider to be close to me gave the LB’er a little raze’n over my rant on the Illinois State guy’s in my last issue.  I wasn’t trying to be a jerk and truly I’m unaware of how their day to day operational process evolves there.  But what I do know is I’ve made it a point to speak with a handful of guys who departed from there.  Governing my state the way I do it’s important for me to pull/support all of our colleges in Illinois, I want all of them to be successful. Now, if they are-on-some-well-known-malarkey, I’m going to call it out!  “I mean who else will?”

While sitting in Milwaukee last week watching my down-state & across-the-state players strut their game, I couldn’t help but ponder how good Christian Willaims (Decatur), Tyler Hall (Rock Island) and Carlos Anderson (Alton) would be if they played harder and just elevated their play in big game settings.  All three tend to drift some when they are being challenged.  Carlos does play hard, but he’s more than capable of providing even more for his team in terms of scoring/rebounding/defending and leadership.  Christian is so talented he leaves your mouth watering just gasping for more production.  I think some stages in a highly-contested game his confidence wavers, then he tends to defer.  Prime example, Saturday morning he was sensational against Dream Vision he knocked down five 3 pters had a couple of dunks finished with close to 20.  Then he comes out the following game in a big-time environment versus Team Loaded and finishes with 6 pts with only 1 pt in the 2nd half, unacceptable.  “Now Tyler Hall is silk-smooth, but too cool at times.”  He reminds me of a 70’s type player sweet jump-shooter with nice elevation unlimited range (you can almost call cash during his release), but he has that tendency to drift then toy around with opponents.  He has to be managed and pushed throughout a game.  His offensive abilities late in a game can be pivotal.  All three of these guys could have a bright future.  From my view up top I feel like all 3 have so much more production in their arsenal.

The most exciting player I saw so far this summer is Team Loaded’s (NC) point-guard Dennis Smith, the kid is breathtaking during stretches of a game.  N.C. State. Duke, North-Carolina, Wake Forest are high on his list.  The kid will have a short stay at a college campus.

St. Viator coach Mike Howland will take a position at Missouri State, which leads to some speculation regarding Roosevelt Smart’s return.  Howland also coaches Lock-Down who has been impressive all spring & summer.  He’s consistently shown he’s a bright young mind with a promising future on the business.
