I was pondering something recently and my inspirational vices/voices transmitted to the innovative mind of Hall of Fame Coach/leader/speaker/historian/life Coach George Raveling. I read an excerpt from some of his literature that I was bound by the fact that most of us could exhibit and share in our daily worlds. “Life is about imperfections not about chasing the perfect. The exciting part about our lives is that every part of it is always under construction. Many times change knocks at the door, but we do not welcome it as a positive growth opportunity. We all need truth-tellers in our lives…”
Aquan Smart the six-foot three guard from Niles North committed to Maryland a week ago after taking an official visit. The Terrapins’ swooped in landing one of our top prospects in the 2020 Class. The slithery scorer had numerous high-major Programs displaying interest. Despite of his lofty 23 points per outing statistic, majority of the Big Schools did not shower him with the love that Maryland wooed him with. Iowa State, TCU, Nebraska, Illinois, Missouri, & Texas A&M was reportedly seen visiting the North Suburban star.
On a Tuesday wintery night, I took in a Missouri Valley contest at Valparaiso catching famed Illinois Warrior Alum Matt Lottich (New Trier) lead his squad to a victory over Missouri State. Valparaiso is such a unique place to watch a College game, it has that cozy cuddly vibe. Sitting there it donned on me that I haven’t been in these parts in 5 years but watching 6-foot 7 freshman guard Donovan Clay exploit his all-around game on this night, the moment was exhilarating. Clay hails from downstate Alton High, we knew last season that this late bloomer could develop into a special player in the right Collegiate setting. Now NBA guys will begin a trail to this Northwest Indiana School. Clay was the sleeper prospect in our 2019 Class.
CLARK 68 – CRANE 64
Fri-night, Feb 28th – Spot-Liter’s game of the week
Top game of the night happens to be on the West Side of Chicago at Christ the King, it was a great vibe and the tracks were just alright. The ball game was a 2A Regional Final in which Clark sputtered a 12-point cushion with less than five minutes remaining but managed to hold on tightly for the four-point victory where they will advance to another all-out collision this upcoming week. Darrius Perryman finished with 18 points, 5 rebounds but his two huge three-pointers in the fourth quarter really took the air out of the Cougars. The lefty sophomore’s play was impressive from the very start. He demonstrated a lot of poise and confidence for such a young player. Crane received a stellar outing from senior guard Jalen West, he recorded 21 points & 9 rebounds. His play in the last few weeks has been phenomenal. Robert Hobbs registered 13 points & 15 rebounds but missed several point-blank attempts throughout the contest, in addition several miscues at the foul line, which is a recipe for defeat especially in the playoff environment. Congratulations to long time Public League Coach Terry Head. He possesses the leadership qualities to construct and rebuild sagging Programs. His track record validates my point.
As I embark on a new chapter, my sights are now set on utilizing my vision as well as experience to accelerate a gold standard blueprint for the Hyde Park Academy Program. We will use a dosage of Terry Head’s formula to construct the necessary ingredients we seek in potential incoming student athletes, those who will value education and look to flourish in the classrooms/hallways as well the hard-wood. My target will always be to up pend Red South rivals: Bogan, Curie, Simeon, and Morgan Park…
UNION (TN) 82 – MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE 76
Saturday, Feb 22nd
Traveled to Jackson, Tennessee to watch my kid play on Senior Night, I was overcome with so many emotions, while recognizing the opportunity to experience such a memorable occasion. Anytime a parent can participate on a Senior Day, it’s a gratifying honor. My family and I are appreciative to Union University Head Coach David Niven for making this day possible. Niven manages a tight ship, holding his guys accountable on and off the floor which provides life-learning lessons with growth attached. On this day we watched Niven’s squad beat an undermanned Mississippi Team guided by highly respected Veteran Coach Mike Jones. He had a short roster due to injuries & other unforeseen circumstances. Union had five players reach double digit scoring. They play in a tough Gulf South Conference that resembles some lower level Division One Leagues. Their Conference compare slightly to the Great Lakes which is where Southern Indiana, Lewis University, and Wisconsin Parkside play. Now the Gulf South seem to have more overall depth with teams & more individual fire power. Union (18-9 – 13-7) has one of the more talented teams in the League and can roll out a line-up of eight deep in its rotation led by high scoring guard Tyree Boykin, and talented swingman Terrandus Smith, they space the floor with 6-6 sharp shooter Cooper Meadows, floor general/ catalyst Bryson Butler ignites them with energy and toughness, 6-10 Big Man Sam Gueye is skilled & can score, and his talented little brother 6-8 freshman Ousmane Gueye is a promising prospect, sophomore Ty Parks gives them versatility in scoring when he’s on the floor, red shirt sophomore guard Payton Stovall provides a stabilizing presence when engaged. Collectively they tend to sleepwalk through stretches of a ball game, surveillance indicates tendencies where they are slow scrambling back on defense and not locking down & getting stops when needed. This pattern will have to change immediately because they will need some easy baskets where runouts and transition play will be a must against the highly octane 3-guard attack of West Alabama. Coach Niven will have the monumental task of managing and identifying a lineup that matches up accordingly in this important Regional Playoff Opener Tuesday night on West Alabama’s court. Hopefully all of them will be on a different frequency in terms of being mentally ready to play. “Just a few observations, we’re big game ready.”
EVANSTON 61 – GLENBROOK SOUTH 60 OVT
Fri-Feb. 21st – (Spot-Liter’s game of the week)
Over-flow crowd watched the Wildkits narrowly escape a well tooled G.B. South squad with a Conference title on the line. Glenbrook South just knocked off Evanston a month ago at home, so this game was billed as a high stake’s affair. A full house was entertained to a 25-25 tie at intermission. Dom Martinelli was held in check with 10 points, but then he erupted for 22 second half points. He manufactured the feat, impressively playing on one leg. Martinelli seemed to have banged knees or sprained an ankle early in the first quarter. This kid re-arranges his moves & motions while attacking defenders. He slithered & slid around Evanston players for layups or short jumpers. Drama filled the last minute of the contest when Martinelli drove the length of the floor through congestion for a lay-up with 6.0 seconds left to force an overtime at 54-54 apiece. The suspense continued when junior Blake Peters buried a three-pointer with 50 seconds remaining in overtime and he was fouled converting the 4-point play to put the Wildkits ahead 58-56. Then after a couple exchanges in the waning seconds Junior Big-Man Nick Martinelli was fouled attempting a 3-pointer in overtime with no time left, he needed to make all three to force a second overtime but made the first two while the third rattled in & out in a heartbreaking defeat. Great High School game and environment.

GAME OF OUR WEEK: FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 7TH, 2020
ROLLING MEADOWS 93 – BUFFALO GROVE 83 (2 OVTs)
A mellow vibe filled the air at this North Suburban contest, once the jump ball was tossed, the atmosphere turned electric. A large crowd at Buffalo Grove witnessed a double overtime thriller where highly touted junior prospect Max Christie recorded 42 points, 17 rebounds, and four assists. Christie’s performance was clutch, he dropped two free-throws with nine seconds left to send the game into to the first overtime. While 6-5 sophomore Kam Craft turned in an impressive outing, he mesmerized the audience with 46 points while nailing seven treys. He was equally as impressive as Christie and showed he was a high-level shooter and could rise to the occasion in a big game setting. He solidified his status as one of the top 5 players in the sophomore class. This was worth the track.
In the last issue I had a bad unforced turnover, we shared some ungodly information without properly confirming the facts. I’ve been around long enough to know that I should always check my sources especially when it comes to providing information on players from downstate. It was mentioned that top 10 senior prospect Ray’Sean Taylor had de-committed from SIU Edwardsville. It was not factual, and I certainly didn’t intend on creating any issues with Brian Barone’s Program which we know he and his staff is working diligently to build long-term success. My apologies to Coach Barone and the Taylor family.

CITY FESTIVITIES - CHICAGO PUBLIC LEAGUE SEMI-FINALS
SIMEON 79 – CURIE 69
This was a knee/jerk experience. Our City Finals held at The Jones Armory on 52nd and Cottage Grove in the Washington Park neighborhood (gotta love it!). An official organized hoop game hadn’t been played here since 1960’s or 70’s. This was a spruced-up Venue headed by the Nike/Jordan brand. Sort of a cathedral/theater type setting on a misty surface. Simeon pretty much ran out on the Condors from the onset with leads up to 20. Curie was again without long time Head Coach, Mike Oliver due to his bizarre suspension. His troops were clearly distracted from all the unfamiliar fixtures. They struggled getting back on defense all night, seemed a step slow, and relied too much on gambling and hoisting way too many outside shots while trying to get back in the game with the homerun approach. That strategy was ineffective. Curie’s inspirational leader & scorer Ramean Hinton was held in check with 9 points, he managed 12 rebounds, mostly offensive. Junior point guard Nick Owens was the lone bright spot with 18 points and 9 dishes. Senior forward Saiveon Williams finished with 18 points. Simeon received dynamite performance from junior guard Ahamad Bynum with 25 points. The Wolverines deemed to be playing well at the right time of the year. Their junior front court tandem of 6-6 Dylan Ingram and 6-7 Philip Holmes Jr. have started to come into their own in the last month.
MORGAN PARK 74 – BOGAN 60
In the night capper at this Theater Venue Morgan Park got off to a rousing start against their Red South rivals and led at intermission 39-20. This contest was a yarner, Bogan just couldn’t get shots to fall and it wasn’t like they were taking bad shots either, it seemed as though the basket had a lid on it, so you could say the Bengals were snake bitten. Coach Goody had such a calm presence throughout, knowing he will get another crack at the Mustangs in weeks to come on a more traditional setting and surface. There would be more to this rivalry in a few weeks. Adam Miller led Morgan Park with 25 points, 14 coming in the first quarter. Talented senior and New York native Brandon Weston racked up 16 points and 15 boards. Wake Forest recruit Marcus Watson had 16 points. For the Bengals Antoine Bloxton finished with 16, Kyndall Davis and D.J. Jones recorded 14 points apiece.

HOLIDAY WRAP-UPS
- PONTIAC – Curie’s two-year dominance at Pontiac has solidified their squad as one of the top 2 or 3 programs in the city. Many of us locals have been impressed with their continued growth throughout the last 5 years. The Condors got by No.1 Bloom 72-67 in the title game capturing back to back titles. Southeast Missouri recruit Ramean Hinton finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and five steals in the final, landing him MVP/sportsmanship honors. Joliet West loss to Curie 68-58 in the semi-finals, but indicated a statement to hoop followers around the state that come March they will be a serious threat at challenging for a sectional title. January 20th will be a big test for the 12-2 Tigers when they face off against highly regarded Lincoln Park in the Spot-Liter’s MLK Classic.
- HINSDALE CENTRAL – Homewood-Flossmoor captured the title, knocking off DePaul Prep in overtime 53-48. Tournament MVP RJ Ogom was a force. DePaul’s junior leader/point guard Ty Johnson continues to draw rave reviews with his productive floor game. He’s listed as one of the top playmakers in the 2021 Class.
- YORK – Bolingbrook won the prestigious Jack Tosh Holiday Classic getting pass the host team. Elon recruit Darius Burford was the tournament MVP, averaging nearly 23 markers in five games. York’s Nate Shockey (North Dakota signee) was stellar throughout the event averaging 23. The state’s No.2 prospect, junior Max Christie of Rolling Meadows, had a terrific showing as did Wisconsin recruit Junior forward Chris Hodges (Schaumburg).
- PROVISO WEST – Bogan regularly recognized as one of the elite programs in the Chicago area, has already notched victories over Morgan Park & Simeon, won the West tournament for the second consecutive year. Senior Antoine Bloxton scored 33 points in the Bengals route of Morton 71-52. Bogan received strong performances from senior swingman Kyndall Davis (Long Island recruit) and junior playmaker Darrion “DJ” Jones. Most of the tournament conversation centered around Proviso charted the “jaw dropping” performance of the state’s No.3 prospect, Fenwick junior Bryce Hopkins. He averaged 29 per outing, Bryce is becoming a special talent.
- WHEELING – Niles Notre Dame was the marquee squad at this ritzy venue. Evanston transfer Louis Lesmond has established himself as a top 5 prospect in the 2021 class. The six-foot five snipper had several exhilarating moments where he electrified the sometimes-snooty audience. Notre Dame should be regarded as one of our area’s top teams, most folks do not know they bounced Bogan at the D Rose Classic with its lone defeat a few weeks ago. The North Shore program will be dangerous and difficult to derail come March, especially behind the play of juniors Troy D’Amico and Anthony Sayles, while senior forward Jason Bergstrom (Illinois-Springfield recruit) gives them the necessary leadership and outside shooting they need. Glenbrook South standout Dom Martinelli sparkled and was named to the All-tourney team, along with Niles North high scoring guard Aquan Smart, the top un-signed senior in the state.
- CENTRALIA – Evanston ventured down to Southern Illinois and forged together just enough unity to run out of there with astonishing championship victory over the host team. The Wildcats are off to 14-0 start, fueled by the play of juniors Jaylin Gibson, Blake Peters, and slippery general Isaiah Holden.
- JACOBS – The Hinkle Holiday Classic held out in northwest suburban Algonquin watched Waubonsie Valley win the title behind senior forward Marcus Skeete’s 41 points and the play of junior standout Ben Schwieger to get by Cary Grove 78-65. Cary’s Beau Frericks (Lewis University) had 24 points and Belmont recruit Frank Jakubicek tallied 16. Payton’s un-signed senior forward Jabari Chiphe impressed landing All-tourney honors.
- BIG DIPPER – Tai Streets has his Thornton program off to a hot start. The Wildcats had some traction heading into the Holidays, brandishing victories over Bloom and Bolingbrook before running the tide on opponents at Rich South where they seem to steam roll everyone by a twenty-point margin. Junior guard Brandon Hall is emerging as a budding stand-out.
- COLLINSVILLE – Mundelein made the trek to the metro east area of our state and ran into tournament MVP RaySean Taylor. The six-foot one Collinsville’s guard is a legitimate assassin as he illustrated during much of the event. This Southern Illinois Edwardsville recruit is worth the price of admission and is primed to garner first team all-state votes in a couple of months.

Un-signed seniors on-hand: Oswego East 6-6 tandem of Sam Shultz and Will Wolfe, Marian Catholic counters with Yemi Elutilo 6-3 & six-footer Joe Green. Western Illinois signee Elijah Jones (Marian) will need to stay out of foul trouble to be a valuable contributor to his team. H.F. will have 6-6 R.J. Ogom arguably the third best player featured at the event, The College of Charleston recruit is a force offensively, might have just enough fuel to get his squad to the title game. Josiah Palmer has begun to assert himself as a reliable scorer on the wing. Rockford-Auburn will be armed with talented junior prospect 6-4 Josh Ausler. He’s recognized at the Spot-Liter as No. 6 hoopster in the 2020 Class. Stevenson will present some challenges for opponents with their strategic ways, led by Matt Ambrose-a University Indianapolis recruit. A Marquee match-up could prevail between the Rams and Marian Catholic. Willowbrook will have the nifty left-hander Everette Stubblefield spearheading their attack. Westinghouse visits with a talented quadruplet’s led by senior guard Devin Davis, the high scorer has been shelved with an injury the last few weeks. He is expected to return, Davis is considered one of the top un-signed seniors in the area. Back-court mate junior Kier Jordan has shown some serious promise in recent weeks. Six-foot six sophomore forward Martell Webb has the potential to be a budding stand-out, junior forward Gary Johns at 6-7 shows blemishes of being a break-out prospect. DePaul prep has rapidly rising junior leader & play-maker Ty Johnson and senior swingman Lance Mosley who has a wealth of experience. A Marquee match-up could prevail between the Rams and Marian Catholic. Willowbrook will have the nifty left-hander Everette Stubblefield spearheading their attack. • Pontiac – Curie defeated Bloom in the final 58-44. Kansas State’s recruit Dajuan Gordon captured the MVP Honors. This continues to be our top Holiday Tournament attraction. Simeon’s un-signed senior Antonio Reeves re-affirmed he’s a real hooper with instinctive abilities to excel.
• Hinsdale – Marian Catholic knocked off south-suburban neighbor Homewood-Flossmoor in the title game. Marian’s junior guard Ahron Ullis was named MVP. Oswego East’s guard Ray J. Dennis was terrific in several games averaging 24.5 in 4 games. This west-suburban event is becoming a good destination.

4pm – Bloomington vs Warren Township
6pm – Benet Academy vs Peoria Manual
7:30pm – Bloom vs Pontiac
9:00pm – Oak Park vs West Aurora
Notes: The State’s No. 1 Tournament, Curie should roll in un-defeated with a wave of scrappy hard playing athletes led by Kansas State recruit Dajuan Gordon. Supporting cast of Ramean Hinton, Damari Nixon, Josiah Hammons, & Armond Williams Jr. New Trier looks to present some problems for opponents with its towering front-court of Ciaran Brayboy, a Harvard recruit and 6-8 SR Spencer Boehm, under-the-radar floor general Sam Silverstein. Bloom-Curie match-up would make this venue a frenzy affair to view. The Trojan’s Junior Trio, Keshawn Williams, Donovan Newby, & Martice Mitchell will exhilarate an audience. Watch-out for guard Justin Moore. Benet Academy will be angling to knock-off someone behind the play of Senior forward Kendrick Tchoua one of the state’s top un-signed seniors and Junior Colin Crothers. Usual perennial favorite Simeon having a slow start with a line-up of young players logging significant minutes will still be a much-watched squad, with senior scorer & top un-signee Antonio Reeves, senior guard Kejuan Clements, junior Bryce Hall, soph wiz Ahamed Bynum. Two prized freshmen A.J. Casey & Jaylen Drane. Bloomington will be a tough squad to deal with featuring SIU recruit Chris Payton and top un-signed guard Caleb Donaldson. Oak-Park comes in with a senior laden quartet of Chase Robinson, Anthony Roberts, Charlie Hoehne, & Dashon Enoch, and soph guard Isaiah Barnes should be someone to watch. Dark-horse team is Plainfield North who has a line-up of impressive juniors Kaleb Fenelus Williams and Colin O’Rourke.

Notes: This will be a good tournament to view, the location is in close proximity with the Proviso West Xmas event as well as York. DePaul Prep is playing at a high-level right now and could be the early favorite with Brown recruit Perry Cowan performing like an All-Stater un-song junior Lance Mosley. Sophomore to watch 6-8 Brian Matthews. Marian Catholic has junior Ahron Ullis averaging close to 20, senior Chris White junior guard Joe Green. Oswego East comes in with Boise State recruit Raymond Dennis & junior forward Sam Schultz. St. Rita will have un-signed senior Jeremiah Oden. 4:30pm – Chicago Walter Payton vs Bartlett
6:00pm – Crystal Lake South vs Waubonsie Valley
7:30pm – Jacobs vs Streamwood
Notes: This is a Holiday venue that I was a frequent visitor there, an event where you could potentially notice some sleeper prospects. Cary Grove’s pair Beau Frericks a stellar junior guard & six-foot eight junior forward Frank Jakubicek. Northern Illinois signee Keenon Cole will be attraction coming in with his Streamwood squad. Quinn Peterson one of the area’s top young Coaches will be on-hand with his Walter Payton team, Barrington, South-Elgin, Dixon, & Rockford Jefferson has promising young talent.
BIG SHOTS
Our area lost one of all-time great high-school players when former St. Francis De Sales stand-out Eric Anderson passed away last week-end at 48. Anderson led De Sales to a 29-2 record and a second-place finish in the Class AA 1988 Season. He went on to become a heck of player at Indiana where he led the Hoosiers to the 1992 Final Four.
The two-day Team Rose event at Mount-Carmel December 8th & 9th was a really good event. Some match-ups attracted a huge viewing with Bloom vs Morgan Park; St. Viator vs Oswego East; Brother Rice vs Uplift; Bloomington vs Leo; Kenwood vs Hillcrest; and Oak-Park vs Orr all were prime games and highly competitive. “It was the place to be in Chicago last week-end.”
TOP UN-SIGNED SENIORS TO FOLLOW

• Tujautae Williams 6-6 G MM Orr – “Nice length, likes to get up & down.”

PROVISO WEST HOLIDAY CLASSIC
December 26th, 2018 – First Round Pairings
9:30am – Leo vs Longwood
11:00am – Uplift vs Elgin-Larkin

4:00pm – Fenwick vs Dunbar
5:30pm – Hillcrest vs Proviso West
7:00pm – Whitney Young vs Crete-Monee
8:30pm – St. Joseph vs Morton
Notes: Not as strong as its been in previous years but a couple of match-ups might lure a sizeable crowd. New addition Chicago Leo could provide some healthy fireworks for this venue. Leo’s Fred Cleveland Jr. and Uplift’s Markese Jacobs (DePaul signee) will be fun to watch if the match up occurs, now the Anderson Brothers (Dechaun-Kendale) could be too much for Uplift. Bogan probably boasts more talent than anyone in the field with Rashaun Agee, Jeremiah Washington, Jordan Booker, Kyndall Davis, & rapidly improving junior forward Kennedy Brown. They could be the favorite. Whitney Young rolls in with top notch juniors D.J. Steward & Tyler Beard. Senior leader Myles Baker has been consistently good. Colleges will flock to this venue as well to get a close-up look at a few of these standout prospects, including highly touted sophomore Bryce Hopkins a 6-5 scorer from Fenwick.

HERE’S A GLIMPSE AT THE TOP 6 PROSPECTS AT EACH POSITION IN THE 2020 CLASS
“This class has some talented cagers, guys we plan to follow closely the next five weeks. Geneva’s 6-7 wing Nate Santos made such a splash during the April evaluation period, I’m curious as to how he will respond when the closely viewed July period takes its course. Back-court players Keshawn Williams (Bloom) and Marcus Watson possess special talents; their challenges will come with transitioning over to the PG slot where both could develop into stand-outs. The pair reminds us of some dudes we used to produce regularly in Chicago years ago, after D.J. Steward and Adam Miller the class offers several under-the-radar types like Micah Schnyder (Chgo Christian) and Connor Kochera (Viator) while the Quad Cities area can brag about the development of Geneseo heart-throb Isiah Rivera, a six-foot 4 all-around performer whose floor game continues to draw rave reviews. Aurora Christian 6-6 wing Will Wolfe was impressive in the Spring. He possesses excellent length on the perimeter. Without many potential post players in our state at his moment, we do have a promising core of forwards with length and a good up-side. In our North-side circle, we are excited about the potential of Lincoln Park’s next stud Romelle Howard as he matures on & off the floor, he could possibly draw array of high-major interest soon. Colin Crothers, Nate Seputis, and Seryee Lewis could emerge as significant Mid-major recruits. Two dude’s who might be lauded as stand-outs one day could very well be 6-10 Martice Mitchell (Bloom) and 6-7 Joliet Central wing forward Kee Hargrove. We just got a close-up viewing of Mitchell at Loyola’s Team Camp. He was knocking down 3s while handling himself comfortably on the perimeter. He’s improved since the school season ended.

On Wednesday June 13th Loyola-Chicago held its annual team camp at its north-side campus, the Ramblers coming off some significant steam from a remarkable Final Four run. Porter Moser & his staff assembled some pretty good teams and a fine cast of prospects they could size-up comfortably in cozy one day window.
The morning slate offered many us an opportunity to view the likes of Lemont’s slender six-foot seven Senior Nate Ferguson, who we cast at the I.S.L., ranked 21 over-all in the 2019 Class. Ferguson, capped-off the afternoon session with four 3-pointers wrapping up a fine day; Romeoville 2020 prospect Destin Whitaker (16) displayed some offensive ability. Niles Notre Dame trio of Anthony Sales, Troy Pilon, and guard Joey Tianen showed they have a bright future. Sayles is an elite prospect, recognized as a highly touted Top 10 player in our 2021 group. While Tianen (31), we think is vastly under-rated; Loyola Academy had the 2020 twins Bennett & Jordan Kwiecinski on set, we got a good look at their abilities, while highly regarded 2019 six-foot four swing-man Connor Barrett is still shelved with an injury, he’s expected back for the Morris shoot-out (June 27th & 28th). Ray J. Dennis and his Oswego East crew invaded the north-side campus with an exciting appeal. Dennis, flashed a slithery floor game to go along with some respectable out-side shooting. He validated why we consider him the top PG in the 2019 Class. 6-6 Senior Kamron Battle was intriguing & 2020 forward Sam Shultz (58) showed signs of someone with Division One potential.
Oak Park went un-defeated in their games, bolstering a talented core of Seniors in Anthony Roberts (18) Chase Robinson (43) Dashon Enoch (51) Charlie Hoehne (59) while adding promising 2021 prospect Isiah Barnes whose shown flashes of being a high-level recruit. The 6-4 wing has a top 20 ranking in the 2021 Class. Expectations will be heighten for the 2018-19 Huskies.
Chicago Leo was on-hand showcasing the talents of Fred Cleveland and Junior strong forward Kendale Anderson. Senior Dachaun Anderson was sattled by an injury and did not dress. Detroit-Loyola made the track from Michigan and had the presence of Myron Gardner alone. The six-foot six athletic beast demonstrated too many of us on-lookers why he’s such a coveted recruit. Gardner was able to slice & dice his way around defenders, throwing-down monstrous slams. “The kid has some mitts on him”, we see why the Ramblers are giddy about the prospect of landing him! Marian Catholic showed-up with intriguing cast of talented players; 6-5 Senior Chris White looked good, the lanky versatile cager displayed some athleticism and defensive ability, while coming off a stellar showing at the Rice University Elite Camp. 2020 prospect Ahron Ullis (22) sizzled, fellow 2020 prospect Elijah Jones gave us a glimpse at what his potential could be. Evanston, Whitney Young, Simeon, Bloom, Farragut, Lincoln Park, Curie, and DePaul Prep all rolled-in for the late after-noon session, so automatically you know a climate change was inevitable.
South-Suburban Bloom has a talent core of under-classmen, starting with a promising trio of back-court players: Keshawn Williams, Dante Maddox Jr., and Donovan Newby. Williams is an electric talent & has chance to be special player at the next level while Maddox and Newby possess Division One Mid-major potential. Junior forward Martice Mitchell is starting to develop into pivotal presence on the floor at 6-9. The sleeper on the squad happens to be Kevin Vance, a six-foot six explosive Senior with a huge up-side. Mid-majors will zoom in on this Senior swiftly and he’s a good student. Next season Bloom could be a poised & ready for the prime-time.
If Evanston lands a big man, look out. Their team has a steady guard corps of Lance Jones (thus far he’s been plagued by up & down outings), Jaheim Holden, Jaylin Gibson, and Isaiah Holden. Blake Peters continues to impress each time we view him; he and Gibson has opportunity to capture something really special before they’re high-school career ends. St. Viator performed well as usual, the Hernandez/Calvin & Kochera Co. seem to have that twinkle in their eye & as well as the certain strategic blend. Farragut’s back-court tandem of Senior Aaron Strong & Junior Reggie Strong went about productive business as usual. Simeon has taken a different shape this month auditioning a banner class of incoming Freshman as well as a returning crew of highly regarded under-classmen. 2020 prospects Bryce Hall, and sincere Callwood has been impressive all Spring, both we are now recognizing to be vastly over-looked. Second year talented guard Ahamed Bynum (4) is going to be one of the area’s elite, while 2022 Dandie’s A.J. Casey & Jaylen Drane continue to sparkle, the rapidly improving 6-7 Senior forward Jeremiah Stamps and fellow 2019 mate, sharp-shooter Antonio Reeves round-up a solid core. Stellar play-maker Kejuan Clements wasn’t even on-hand. Curie’s Dejune Gordon did not disappoint anyone either at this event. The six-foot four wing might be the best player in the Public League. Loyola had a well-orchestrated event… Kudos!
UIC’s event on campus the previous week-end was solid also. DE LaSalle brandished a cast of under-classmen we will follow through-out the Summer. Steve McClain and his staff always do a fine job with their team camp. It was also good to catch-up with Assistant Coaches Tony Harvey & Dee Brown. T. Harvey was always a favorite and one of the more colorful coaches in the industry. We are happy he’s here in the Windy City. Stay tuned for more results…

PROVISO WEST XMAS TOURNEY
December 27th, 2017
1st Round Pairings
• Whitney Young vs Longwood 8:30am
• Downer’s Grove North vs St. Joseph 11:00am
• Proviso East vs Bogan 5:30pm
• Uplift vs Providence St. Mel 9:30am
• Fenwick vs Proviso West 12:30pm
• New Trier vs Hillcrest 4:00pm
• Elgin-Larkin vs Kenwood 2:00pm
• Orr vs Morton 7:00pm
Notes: A quality venue, doesn’t have a wealth of individual star attraction the individual star attraction that Pontiac has, but does bolster some very good programs: Young, Orr, Bogan, Fenwick, St. Joseph, Proviso East, Elgin-Larkin, Kenwood; while Uplift has an opportunity to redeem itself from a slow start. Break-out player might be East’s senior guard-Quinlan Bennett. Orr’s Chase Adams will dazzle audiences, while Larkin’s Jalen Shaw will display what his bright future could look like in a few years. Markese Jacobs of Uplift carries the weight of a 6,000-pound elephant. He’s got to get himself into a groove where he can just play and get rid of all the other on-court theatrics. Lately his on-court demeanor does not display the type of leadership this undermanned team needs right now. Fenwick’s D.J. Stewart will garner some close viewing. Chicago Bogan could be a dark horse with their contingent scrappy players. Chicago Orr
HINSDALE CENTRAL
December 27th, 2017

• Hinsdale Central vs St. Charles East 7:00pm

Notes: DePaul Prep should not look past Crete-Monee, they’re 1st round opponent. Crete has an exciting left-hander Tyrese Hunt and fellow senior guard Josh Evans, these guys can play. The cream of the crop suppose to be Bolingbrook, but H.F. or Marian Catholic should up-stage last year’s Tournament Champion. Lincoln Park will be the most entertaining team in the field. The Lions bolster an athletic squad that are young and inexperienced, but fun to watch.

Junior standout 6-6 Terrence Hargrove and Old Dominion recruit, Joe Reece will have fans on the edge of their seats with their high wire act. We’ve always enjoyed this venue, now the twins from MacArthur-Armon & Amir Brummett will have spectators scratching their heads at some of their antics, they are talented pair.

HOLIDAY ALIGNMENT +
LINCOLN PARK 96 WHITNEY YOUNG 91 2 OVTsAt L.P – Friday, December 22nd
This match-up had the makings of some traditional old-school battles, both squads filled a roster with some of the area’s top under-classmen. Unfortunately, the Zee Bees wandered out as if they were mentally shut-off for the Xmas break. Hopefully Coach Bobby Worthington will re-group his troops before they head to the State Farm Classic in Bloomington. You can easily get tattooed early at that venue if you come-out un-inspired. Evanston’s young contingent was careless with the ball at times, but still managed a 20-point victory. Their freshman trio of 6-3 Jaylin Gibson, Isaiah Holden, and sharp shooter Blake Peters, continue to contribute significant minutes as first year youngsters; top-flight juniors Lance Jones and back-court mate Jaheim Holden form a terrific duo. We would love to see them get tangled up in a North suburban rumble with St. Viator’s junior backcourt tandem of Jerry Hernandez and Trey Calvin, that’s front-seat viewing. Evanston’s Jones, regarded as a Top 5 or 6 prospects in the 2019 Class has to improve his outside shooting! For some viewers like myself, I was bummed out that Zion’s exciting 6-5 sophomore Damontae Taylor did not dress, due to a school related incident. He along with freshman stand-out Amar Augillard have promising futures on the hardwood. Augillard suffered through a off-night offensively. His game must grow into more of just hoisting-up shots.
A couple of weeks ago the 10th Annual Team Rose shoot-out was good; the two-day affair gave teams the perfect platform to showcase where their profile stood at this juncture in the season. Unfortunately, majority of the teams failed to elevate their play/status at this entertaining venue. Most of the squads’ struggles were symptomatic of young & inexperience or just hadn’t found a groove yet in early December. But several games drew the attention of many who attended the 2-day event such as Brother Rice-Kenwood tilt; Hillcrest-Romeoville (marred by bad officiating); Danville-Chicago Orr had a down to the wire finish; Providence St. Mel-Hope Academy was a close one. All in all, Tournament directors did a really good job.
About an estimated three hundred spectators packed the tiny Lincoln Pk gymnasium up-on Armitage to witness a double over-time thriller. This was probably one of the more entertaining games I’ve saw around these parts in years. This was extra special because it was two of the Chicago Public Leagues finer academic schools colliding head on, which once was a customary match up before the conference re-alignment occurred about 10 years or so ago. The two Programs were intertwined through the former competitive Red-West Conference. I recall some memorable match-ups between the schools when Lincoln Pk was a perennial conference challenger for a period of 4-6 years under Mike Thompson, the Montgomery brothers, Jonathan Henley, and Courtney Bell era. The cracker box gym was the place to be with it’s up-close intimate viewing which held such top-notch ball games regularly. Returning to the present, this ball-game was played at a frenzy pace, both teams went after one another with avenges, it took a 43-point effort by Lincoln Park’s junior guard Chris Roberts “the rubber band man”, to hold off the top ranked Dolphins. Roberts was un-believable with an array of acrobatic off-balance spin moves that left the standing room only crowd in a climatic rush. Meanwhile, the Lions stand out, 6-6 senior Terrence Shannon was saddled with foul trouble, he eventually fouled out in the 1st over-time with 14 points. Junior, Bill Flowers registered 10 markers for the Lions. Young’s Javon Freeman was splendid, the Valpo recruit was sleek & surgical recording a cool 22 points, Matt Lottich’s Program at Valpo nabbed a jewel of a prospect. Junior big guard Myles Baker “once again” displayed to on-lookers that he is a legitimate mid-major plus recruit, finishing the night with 22; after the Proviso West Xmas Tournament, he likely could see his stock soar. Forgotten senior Justin Boyd was real good, he had 22 points, South Florida recruit, Xavier Castenada went for 10. He wasn’t himself, he seemed discombobulated most of the night, which anyway belong to the Roberts & Co.. Long-time Public-League followers would have enjoyed this affair filled with drama (from the scorer’s table to fatigued game officials). “You can bet players from both teams will harness this game as a memorable outing.”

IN TODAY’S FANTASY MOCK MATCHUPS
“This is how we would face them off”
Northwestern vs Loyola-Chicago
At Gentile Arena
“This game would be billed for supremacy with neighboring bragging rights at stake up on the far North-Side. Loyola looks to be a headed for a special season – off to a 9-1 start. While forward Aundre Jackson could be a NBA pick in June, he’s surrounded by a contingent of versatile players who trust their system. C.C.’s cardiac crew and their celebratory ways are now seeking to rekindle the magical path towards another NCAA berth. This would be one heck of a game to see.”
DePaul vs Southern Illinois
at Wintrust Arena in Chicago
“The SIU Alums would come out in droves for this affair, it would be a sea of maroon looming the arena. The 5-3 Salukis against an early battle-tested 4-4 surging DePaul squad now playing well after an early tough schedule. Eli Cain and Tre McCallum starting to hit a groove. SIU has three or four talented players so this match-up would be interesting rumble.”
Illinois vs Bradley
in Peoria, IL
“The Illini faithful would pack the place. Standing room only an hour before game would be anticipated. Brad Underwood has created a culture of tenaciousness, his group competes at a high level. LaRon Black and Kipper Nichols are for real. Bradley bolstering a 7-2 mark, likely a year away from being a perennial power again in the Missouri Valley. This game would bring out the “who’s who” in Central Illinois and with emotions running high on the court and in the stands, this would be a nail-biter.”
Illinois State vs Northern Illinois
in Dekalb, IL
“Red bird fans travel in full force, that might be an added incentive to drive the Huskies student-body away from their social binges. ISU plagued by some injuries have a 4-4 record. The 5-4 Huskies have one of our state’s more entertaining players to watch with guard- Eugene German. NIU has allowed several games to slip away late, which seems anxiety heightens and decision- making becomes sketchy during the 2nd half of games for Monty’s crew.”
Eastern Illinois vs UIC
At Pavilion in Chicago
“This would be a re-cap of last season’s Sunday matinee, in which wintery weather conditions, contributed to a low turn-out in attendance. Eastern popped the flames by 15. UIC has a number of guys shelved by injuries, but has managed to forge a 3-5 mark presently. Dikembe Dixson, a pro prospect, is staring to hit his stride after an injury cut-short his sophomore campaign. EIU senior point-guard Cornel Johnston is worth the price of admission. This would be exciting up & down affair.”
Western Illinois vs Chicago State
at Western Hall in Macomb, IL
“Billy Wright has his leathernecks roaring to a 6-2 start, this arena would be rockn’ with Chicago State invading Macomb. Let’s do a visual of a Saturday night tilt that would foster a drove of miscellaneous students who claim to be from the Chi. The D.J. would have tracks blasting from the speakers such as: Jay-Z (the story of O.J.), We don’t luv em (Hoodrich-Pablo Juan), Pick-it-up (Famous Dex), Shinnit. The fans would spend most of the game in a frenzy watching this down-hill track-meet. All in fun, let’s get back to the present!”

ILLINOIS SPOT-LITE 2017 FALL CLASSIC
MEMORY OF MY DEAR FRIEND: WAYNE McCLAIN
In Plainfield, IL (Sept 16-17): Jeremiah Hernandez and Peter Lambesis tallied 14 points apiece as St. Viator defeated a surprising Glenbard East squad in the Final of ISL Fall Classic. Both teams played well through-out the two-day event surprising most observers with their quality team play. Viator beat a really good Oak-Park team in the semi-finals capping 6-0 finish. While East upset 2A power Hope Academy in the other semi-final contest. Hope stand-out guard Javion May was saddled with a leg injury so he did not perform. St. Viator’s cruised through pool play behind sparkling performances from Co-MVPs – Jerry Hernandez and Trey Calvin, the junior tandem provided a potent scoring duo throughout the event. Senior swingman Peter Lambesis was one of surprises at the event. The six foot four lefty was lethal; he demonstrated athleticism by finishing at the rim. He knocked-down shots consistently and displayed precision with heady floor play. Ivy League and Patriot schools should pay him a visit quickly. He’s definitely a division one talent and someone to follow this season. Hernandez validated his status as a Top 15-20 prospect in the state’s 2019 Class. He demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to score in a variety of ways when needed. Trey Calvin is a sleeper type in the “19” Class, was un-assuming threat with silky-smooth skills. He’s very talented and poise with good speed & quickness and a penchant for big play moments. In addition, he knows how to play. Glenbard East has a bright future and it all starts with un-heralded (2020) guards, DaRon Hall and Alijah Nelson. The pair was terrific all weekend. The both of them can be innovative in the open floor. And the plus part is that they take care of the ball and don’t commit costly miscues. Hall had 19 markers in the final, while senior James Peterkin went for 11 points and 10 boards. Hall and Nelson are two players to watch in our promising 2020 Class, as well as Viator Sophomore guard Connor Kochera who did his thing in the shadows of his mates through-out the tournament. This was our second official year hosting the classic in which we honor my friend and former Illinois Coach Wayne McClain, a Peoria native. I will always remember his laughter & passion for the game. As well as our many conversations regarding basketball in our state and our life experiences. His voice of reasoning is always in my thoughts!
There are some areas with this event I will address and tighten in moving forward. I’m always looking for ways of improving while assisting our area coaches in helping them provide a positive environment where they can evaluate their program in a reflective, positive way. Special thanks to the Plainfield Central Staff. I am extremely proud of our lengthy relationship we have built over the course of twenty plus years. I consider Principle Dave Stephens a close friend who was once boys varsity Coach at Plainfield Central, then Athletic Director, and now Principle. Newly appointed Head Coach, Greg Bayer has stardom scripted all over him. His energy and spirit reminds me so much of Dave during his early tenure in the 90s. Greg actually played for Dave in the early to mid 2000s. I thank them for all their support.

ILLINOIS SPOT-LITE 2017 FALL CLASSIC
MEMORY OF COACH WAYNE MCCLAIN
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 16TH & SUNDAY, SEPT. 17TH
PLAINFIELD CENTRAL HIGH-SCHOOL
NEXT LAYER
• Xavier Pinson 6-3 PG MM Chicago Simeon
“Had a strong summer, now Public League foe’s await; this slithery scoring threat will have to share playing time & the Spot-Lite in a crowded back-court. Top 12 – in the class, he has Kent St., George Mason, Cleveland St, Buffalo, Indiana St., W- Milw, Evansville.
• Tyronn Mosley 6-5 G MM Chicago Orr
“Excellent open-court threat, where his athleticism is on full throttle. He had a sizzling spring, summer was somewhat subpar. DePaul, Duquesne, Bradley, UIC, and Chicago St. all in the hunt for his services. Dayton still in the picture.”
• Drew Peterson 6-7 WF MM Libertyville
“Has that Pistol Pete Maravich floppy Hairdo. A versatile player with a good understanding of how to play. Rice, William & Mary, and Yale head his list.”
• Massiah Jones 6-5 SF MM Chicago Simeon
“This kid is a gifted athlete, exceptional quick leaper. Face-up game from 12-15 feet has started to evolve. Superb shot-blocker, a true fit for the Mac and Horizon League. NIU, W- Milw., Cleveland St., Chicago St., and Evansville head-line his list.”
• Maurice Commander 5-8 PG MM Chicago Curie
The lil lefty was nifty and effective all summer. His floor game certainly silenced his critics. He has a slew of mid-majors looking for him to pledge his allegiance. Eastern Ill, Wis- Milw., Evansville, Missouri St., Wofford, SIU-E, Cal-Davis, and Youngstown St.
• Cardell McGee 6-2 G MM Springfield Lanphier
Wrapped-up the summer on a strong note, after some adjustments with a new club team. Silver quick guard with a promising floor game, out-side shooting should be his focus of improvement before the season. Top 16 guy in the class. Offers from DePaul, Illinois St., Ut-Martin seem to be ancient.
• Quinlan Bennett 6-3 G MM Proviso East
“This kid was hampered by a leg injury all of July, but managed to play his way through the summer with-out sitting. Wiry athlete with a huge up-side, one of the true sleepers of the class. Deadly mid-range shooter. We view him as a top 15-20 prospect right now. Robert Morris, Lewis, Manhattan, and Albany. Watch him blowup during the season.”
• Eddie Creal 6-3 G/F MM Romeoville
“A impressive July opened some doors. Can flat-out play, great energy & good athlete. Thrives defensively, fun to watch; another sleeper in the group, unfortunately he plays for coaches who rarely return calls or messages. Southern U., Lewis.
• Jalen Shaw 6-10 C MM Elgin-Larkin
“Has enormous potential, we envision him being a player with impact at both ends of the floor one day. He’s demonstrated shot-blocking ability & rebounding. In fact he runs the floor exceptionally well for a big fella. SIU & UIC are in deep. A player to watch;”
• DeAndre Heckerd 6-1 G MM Romeoville
“I can see what the buzz has been about him; floor game is still in the refining stages. Still plays as if he’s un-sure of situations. Likely could blossom after high-school years. Coppin St, Southern, Bethune Cookman, while Drake Univ. may have vanished since Kendle Moore committed there.”
